Ein wundervoller Schmöker!
Lange habe ich mich gesträubt, diesen 900-Seiten-Klopper anzufangen. Aber das Dicke-Bücher-Camp dieses Jahr hat mich jetzt doch dazu gebracht. Und was soll ich sagen: es war ein episches Meisterwerk, in dem ich nicht nur viel über Paris gelernt habe, sondern auch über die französische Geschichte. Wir folgen verschiedenen Personen von der Belle Epoque bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Und immer wieder tauchen wir auch in die Vergangenheit ab und erfahren, was den Vorfahren unserer Protagonisten widerfahren ist und manche Zusammenhänge werden so erst richtig rund. Rutherfurd ist ein genialer Erzähler und meine Lust, mich wieder in dicke Schmöker zu versenken, hat definitiv zugenommen.
Doch - hat mir sehr gut gefallen! Und das, obwohl ich alles andere als frankophil bin und Paris - wo ich beruflich mindestens 1x pro Jahr bin - schon gleich grad überhaupt nicht! Aber die Geschichte ist nett erzählt, die Perspektiven sind auch interessant: Es gibt quasi eine "Hauptstory", die vom späten 19ten Jahrhundert bis zu 1968 läuft, dazwischen werden immer wieder Vorperioden quasi in Rückblenden erzählt. Am Anfang wusste ich nicht, ob mir das gefällt - jetzt habe ich beschlossen, doch, es gefällt mir sehr! Die Familien sind gut ausgewählt- allein vom jüdischen Plot hätte ich gerne noch mehr gelesen, dafür hätte ich den Sozialisten nicht unbedingt gebraucht - aber der gehört natürlich dazu. Und obwohl ich Paris nicht besonders mag, hat es mir gefallen, dass ich viele der beschriebenen Schauplätze (Place des Voges z.B. oder auch die Gegend um den Louvre) selbst kenne. Eine ganz klare Leseempfehlung von mir - für Paris-Fans sicher NOCH interessanter!
