Shizuka Satomi made a deal with the devil: to escape damnation, she must entice seven other violin prodigies to trade their souls for success. She has already delivered six.

When Katrina Nguyen, a young transgender runaway, catches Shizuka's ear with her wild talent, Shizuka can almost feel the curse lifting. She's found her final candidate.

But in a donut shop off a bustling highway in the San Gabriel Valley, Shizuka meets Lan Tran, retired starship captain, interstellar refugee, and mother of four. Shizuka doesn't have time for crushes or coffee dates, what with her very soul on the line, but Lan's kind smile and eyes like stars might just redefine a soul's worth. And maybe something as small as a warm donut is powerful enough to break a curse as vast as the California coastline.

As the lives of these three women become entangled by chance and fate, a story of magic, identity, curses, and hope begins, and a family worth crossing the universe for is found.

One book, content in all flavors coming right up!

Space, music and hardships of being transgender in an uneducated society. This unintuitive combination lands you with a giant set of languages, complicated violin sessions, a demon hungry for musicians souls, koi fish ready to devour some perfect donuts and a girl who is forced to jerk off for others to provide for herself. Despite this absolutely ridiculous combination the author creates a story that is so absurd and thought proviking that it inevitably leaves a lasting impression on the reader. It may not be a book that you read in one sitting, but it will make you come back for more sugary delight.

This book manages to be wholesome not by showing a too perfect world but by showing a cruel world that can be overcome with love for others and for oneself. One of the few books that can make me cry and giggle within two pages.

Lovely story, very hopeful at the end and loads of representation of different cultures and a trans main character. The plot is full of creativity and ideas I have not ever read before and I love that! It is a bit crazy sometimes but I enjoyed reading all this and being surprised many times along the way!

A fresh story based on new ideas and a good feeling for timing.
