this book was not what i expected AT ALL and i'm so glad i read it! i wanted that mysterious, thriller-like experience that keeps me guessing and wondering. 'nine perfect strangers' wasn't a thriller and it wasn't that mysterious but it was still so gripping and i couldn't put it down! that's mostly due to the characters. this book has 12 perspectives and of course it takes longer to get to know everyone, but all those developments were captivating. it didn't feel too head-jumpy to me. frances has the most 'page-time' and i found her a little too chatty/overly quirky at first, but honestly, she grew on me! being a struggling writer got her my personal bonus points and she was lovely beyond that as well. then, i also really loved zoe and napoleon. ben and jessica's story was also super interesting, and being in masha's head really made for a round story. but, honestly, i liked every character, even those didn't seem so interesting first. moriarty succeeded in giving them all one big secret/crisis but also added more layers, so their arcs were all so satisfying!! 5/5 stars for the characters! BUT, about the plot... as i already said, the story moved me and had me glued to the pages and staying up late and so on. but thinking about it, the plot was a little obvious sometimes. i kinda knew about the lsd thing because i always read the aknowledgments first and it only took reading 'lsd' and then about the smoothies and i knew. still, i was quite surprised when the - what i thought - big secret was revealed halfway through the story!! and then the book got CRAZY. i loved reading that because it kept me on my toes but, thinking about it objectively, the whole time they spent trapped in the basement was maybe a tiny little bit cheap. the ending was super super happy but i was so glad for the characters so i'm totally fine with that. so, in conclusion, it was a very good plot but not perfect! therefore 4/5. seeing the very mixed and very many one-star reviews on her, i don't know if i would recommend this novel to everyone. if you're looking for a character focused entertaining wild ride of a book, i'd say give it a go! and if you don't mind flashbacks too much. i personally love them but there are quite a few!
