Just Kids ist die Geschichte von Patti Smith und Robert Mapplethorpe, die als Liebe begann und zur tiefen Freundschaft wurde, welche bis zum Tod von Robert (1989) anhielt. Sie schafft es trotz einfacher Worte eine magische Stimmung zu übermitteln. Manchmal waren zu viele Namen zu lesen, hat mich aber wenig gestört, weil ich die besondere Künstlerszene genossen habe und sehr gern in dieses Künstlerleben abgetaucht bin.
This book is about the amazing Patti Smith and her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe. They were lovers, companions, best friends, and artist. The book takes us through their lives as young artist living in NYC in the 70’s.
I loved this book so so much! Patti Smith is such a good writer and artist. It was really interesting to see how her relationship with Robert evolved throughout the book. They had so much love, support, and trust in each other and it showed all the way until his death. The book was really slow at first but the writing was amazing. Seeing how much they both accomplished after coming from nothing really opens your eyes to the struggles young artist went through in the 70’s. Patti is absolutely perfect. Her views about the world, her openness and acceptance about it Robert, and her courage and trust in your work to one day make it. You also get the sense of how much they both truly love art and music. Throughout the book she constantly references poets and musicians and her admiration for them. She is a love of art, music, and words. There are so many great quotes through the book too that leave you wanting more. The ending of the book was heartbreaking. My heart broke for Patti who lost Robert and for Robert because he was robbed of life. I rated this book 5/5 because it is one of the most beautiful books ever written about love and friendship. They worked so hard to get to where they wanted. We made the right person famous. Favorite quotes from the book: “No one expected me. Everything awaited me.” “Where does it all lead? What will become of us? These were our young questions, and young answers were revealed. It leads to each other. We become ourselves.” “So my last image was as the first. A sleeping youth cloaked in light, who opened his eyes with a smile of recognition for someone who had never been a stranger.” “Why can't I write something that would awake the dead? That pursuit is what burns most deeply.” “I thought to myself that he contained a whole universe that I had yet to know about.” “Paths that cross with cross again.” “I was there for these moments, but so young and preoccupied with my own thoughts that I hardly recognized them as moments.” Literally so many more!!!!

ich habe viele gedanken zu diesem buch. ich habe mehrere anläufe gebraucht, um es zu ende zu lesen. sehr lange lag es unberührt auf meinem nachttisch, weil mich der schreibstil und die ausdrucksweise anfangs nicht so sehr begeistert und gefesselt haben. ich habe auch gemerkt, dass ich einfach generell mehr seiten als gedacht benötige, um mit einer storyline warm zu werden. ich habe das buch in der orginalsprache, us-amerikanischem englisch, gelesen. die künstler:in patti smith erzählt teile der eigenen lebensgeschichte. fokussiert auf dem zeitraum zwischen den 1960ern bis 1980ern. dabei ist der rote faden die zwischenmenschliche beziehung zwischen patti und robert. das gefiel mir sehr gut. ich empfand den schreibstil als relativ kompliziert. das vokabular sowie die ausdrucksweise fand ich öfters schwer zu verstehen. zeitgleich fand ich den schreibstil sehr poetisch, künstlerisch und schön zu lesen. ich nahm es als extrem individuellen stil wahr. und mit jeder seite begeisterte mich das mehr. die geschichte, die patti smith illustriert, ist extrem umfangreich in verschiedenen aspekten. ich möchte nicht zu viel zu der storyline selbst äußern oder daran kritisieren. das würde in meinen augen etwas dem autobiographischen charakter des buches sowie dessen intention widersprechen. allgemein beinhaltet die geschichte durchaus auch einen reflektierten umgang mit den geschehnissen. ich könnte mir aber vorstellen, dass ich bei einer genaueren analyse verschiedener teile kritisieren würde, dass dies mehr vorliegen sollte. zusätzlich möchte ich anmerken, dass sehr viele namen in dem buch genannt werden. hauptsächlich von anderen künstler:innen. ich kannte die meisten personen davon nicht, was manchmal das verständnis der geschehnisse und die einordnung der personen an anderen stellen erschwerte. zeitgleich gewöhnte ich mich ab der mitte des buches daran und dadurch fiel der lesefluss leichter. außerdem ist es eine art neue künstler:innen kennenzulernen. das buch beschreibt das leben von patti, und robert, über einen relativ langen zeitraum. manchmal war es etwas schwerer der geschichte wieder zu folgen, wenn ich das buch länger nicht in der hand hatte. dies kam aber ab dem zweiten drittel sowieso selten vor. die kapitel einteilung sowie die ästhetischen kleinen details fand ich sehr gelungen. mich hat sehr begeistert, dass das buch visuelle inhalte enthält. fotografien, zeichnungen, gedichte etc. sowohl von patti smith, als auch von robert. auch das cover finde ich ästhetisch sehr ansprechend und sehr passend. was mich an dem buch auch extrem fasziniert hat ist, dass es mich an einigen stellen dazu inspiriert hat selber kreativ zu werden. gelegentlich habe ich daraufhin selber gemalt oder gezeichnt, wenn ich zeit dafür hatte. da ich in den letzten jahren oft einen schwierigen zugang zu teilen meiner kreativität hatte, war ich von dieser wirkung sehr mitgenommen. im positiven sinne. generell hat mich dieses buch auch sehr dazu motiviert und inspiriert selber wieder mehr zu schreiben. ich finde dies beschreibt unter anderem ein gelungenes buch.

Dont get me wrong, even though I only gave it 3 stars, I think this is a really good book, and it has "done something" to me. Patti Smiths life, quotes in the book, poetry and music are interesting, but it was just not totally for me. I like poetry, and the cities she visited, therefore I don't understand why I didn't fully enjoy reading it, but I think it was just the writing, which is just not my preferred writing style. It was often boring, and it really took me AGES to finish it, because I would constantly stop reading it for a couple of weeks, and then suddenly get quite motivated again. Because of that I also forgot about most people, and I honestly wouldn't really be able to tell you what happened. The last 40 pages I liked A LOT though, and I cried. While reading I was constantly asking myself why she really was writing this book. Of course, she was a famous writer, singer, artist and much more, but it was just kind of boring. At the end I understood why she wrote it, actually why she "had to" write it. It makes sense now that I've read the ending that she would write this book. I am happy I read it, and I felt inspired to write poetry at some points, but these type of books are (sadly) not my favourite. I wish I'd liked it more, to be the type of person to read these books, but I'm not. I picked this up just because I love Florence and the machine, and Florence's song "Patricia" is an ode to Patti Smith herself. If you're intimidated by non-fiction but wanna dip your toes into biographies, I'd recommend Just Kids. Or even if you were a fan of Daisy Jones and the Six and its setting. Just kids was written to commemorate Patti's best friend and artist Robert Mapplethorpe, and it was a fascinating and moving journey, that's for sure. The events Patti Smith describes feel like they're made-up at times, she has lived one interesting life! I found the entire biography vastly enlightening in terms of the times and culture, she really captured the rebellious, hopeful and creative atmosphere of the 70s. I loved learning about her relationship with Robert, they really did feel like soulmates in a way. Only downside for me was the at times too detailed account of artists and events that didn't interest me personally. I'll most likely re-read this in the future after doing some research so I can really appreciate the novel.

Die Freundschaft zwischen Patti und Robert ist wunderschön erzählt. Man merkt, wie sehr sie sich geliebt haben. Beide waren auf der Suche nach dem Glück, nach Erfolg und dabei sind sie sich zufällig über den Weg gelaufen & haben sie sich gefunden. Mich hat das Buch sehr berührt, aber nicht nur die Geschichte über die Freundschaft, sondern auch über den weiten Weg zum Erfolg.

Their relationship is insanely beautiful and Patti Smiths writing is gorgeous. I only knew her music before but now I want to read more from her and I want to see Roberts art. I was emerged in their world and absolutely loved this book.

Ich glaube, ich habe sehr lange nicht mehr so viele tolle Sätze in einem Buch markiert, wie in diesem. Sätze, die dich unvermittelt treffen. Auch wenn sich das Buch zeitweise wie ein Tagebucheintrag liest, vergisst man wirklich, dass Patti Smith und Robert Mapplethorpe diese Zeit gemeinsam erlebt haben. Unvorstellbar und so besonders und auch nicht immer einfach das zu lesen. Werde noch lange darüber nachdenken.
