Das Buch punktet v.a. damit, dass vermeintlich stereotype Protagonisten im Laufe der Handlung an Tiefe gewinnen und Sympathie generieren.
Spannend, neu und anders - für Fans von Arcane
Ich habe ziemlich lange gebraucht um Jade City zu lesen, dabei war ich mir sicher, ich würde es mögen. Und ich hatte Recht! Jade City ist moderne Fantasy, frisch und neu, mit spannenden Konzepten, faszinierenden Figuren und einem interessanten Worldbuilding. Im Mittelteil war das Pacing ein kleines bisschen flach meiner Meinung nach, aber sowohl der Anfang als auch das Ende haben mir sehr gut gefallen. Ich bin gespannt, wie es weitergeht.
Dieses Buch wird hoch gelobt und ich kann es voll und ganz nachvollziehen. Wir verfolgen Lan, Hilo und Shae, drei Geschwister von Hause Kaul. Alle drei Charaktere sind unterschiedlich und haben ihre eigene Charmes und Schwächen. Ich mochte alle drei, aber manchmal wollte ich sie für ihre Entscheidungen einfach nur schlagen. In diesem Buch geht es um Konflikte zwischen zwei Gangs/Clans, wobei man hauptsächlich nur die No Peak Clan verfolgt. "Jade City" ist kein Buch das man schnell mal lesen kann, denn man muss aufmerksam dabei sein um die kleine Schritte der Clans und dessen Auswirkungen richtig verstehen zu können. Auch wenn das Buch keine große, schockierende Plottwists hatte, sorgte es trotzdem die ganze Zeit für eine konstante Spannung und ich konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen. Die Action- und Fantasyaspekte fand ich richtig interessant und gut umgesetzt. Die Kampfszenen waren erste Sahne und man merkt, dass die Autorin Erfahrungen in Kampfsport hat. Das Buch kann ich jedem empfehlen, der auf (Clan-)Politik und Intrigen steht. "Jade City" ist ein gut durchdachtes und sorgsam geplottetes Buch, mit einem tollen Setting und facettenreiche Chataktere.
I‘ll be honest ... It took me a long time to warm up to the book. It took over 300 pages. It was like a prologue that dragged on for so long. By now I understand that it needed this, but it was really tiring, ugh. I didn't think I would be close to tears twice though xD I am fascinated by what a tight world has been created here. Everything seems well thought out and without gaps in logic. I love the clan politics and the "feeling" of honour which even puts the own family in the background. (Not that I approve, but it's intriguing). Of the characters, no one has really grown on me yet, but they are all okay and I enjoy reading about them. The writing style is beautiful too <3 If you're willing to engage with a slow and interwoven story/world, I think this is the book for you. I might have enjoyed the lack of drama somewhere too. Not so much heroic shenanigans, but .... just life.

Eine Welt wo ein minimaler Teil von Menschen durch Jade besondere Kräfte erlangen und sich so seit Jahrhunderten um die Macht über diesen Rohstoff rangen. Lange hat alles unter der Oberfläche gebrodelt doch mit einem Mal ist aus dem Frieden ein offener Clan-Krieg geworden und die Linien scheinen zu verschwimmen. Wer verliert sich in der Macht der Jade und wer behält den kühleren Kopf und den längeren Atem … und wer war es, der diesen Krieg überhaupt begonnen hat? An vielen Stellen war ich noch etwas überrannt mit Welt aber das erste Buch verspricht eine fantastische Geschichte mit vielen unerwarteten und spannenden Wendungen. Es ist ein guter Mix aus dem „typischen“ Clan-Krieg und den menschlichen und politischen Seiten einer Macht, die von nur so wenigen gehalten und so vielen beneidet wird.

I have so much and so little to say about this book and absolutely no words for it. I went into Kade City with way too high expectations which weren't 100% met but it's a really good book. I do have a problem with the time skips in this book though, they made reading often times confusing
4 ⭐️ Family, Gang War & Jade Magic The introduction of the different characters in the first part of the book was masterfully done! They felt realistic and distinct. The magic system and the implementation of Jade were surprisingly in the background most of the time. I hope they will take a more prominent place in the second book of the series. The middle part was action packed and fast moving, while the last third of the book was sadly really drawn out before the climax. Looking forward to where the series will go.
Sadly mostly about mafia and clans and less about fantasy
It was not at all what I expected, but I still love it. This book is right up my alley. The fantasy part is not that heavily present, but still an important aspect. It is more about family feuds, politics and a clan war that gives off Hong Kong gangster vibes. My favorite character is definitely Hilo, he is such a badass with a big heart.
