A whiny bodybuilder regrets his life choices.
Well, it's a classic, and it's a classic for a reason. There is so much to think about and so much to interpret - Shelley outdid herself. Nevertheless, at the same time, Frankenstein and his creatures are also whiny little brats and you can't help hoping they will stop moping at some point. Spoiler alert: They don't. Actions have consequences, duh, and nobody ever told them about that, apparently. Now things have gone awry, and they keep crying about it. Well, forgivable in the case of the creature, because he is truly alone, but Frankenstein, your boy next door who thought it was a good idea to play God? Come on, please!
Frankenstein is easily one of my favourite books of all time, and thats because of the Creature. It is probably the most pityful thing in the universe. You simply have to sympathise with the nameless fiend, because everyone knows the feeling of beeing mistreated and not accepted by those you love. The saddest thing is, that the Monster is probably a better person than everyone else in the book, but his love is rejected so he chose to be the monster that everybody saw in him. I think Mary Shelly wants to tell us that nobody is born evil, bad persons are a product of their experiences with society. Monsters don't just exist, me make our own Monsters.

Das Buch beginnt auf einem Schiff am Nordpol, wo der Kapitän einen unerwarteten Gast aufgreift - Viktor Frankenstein erzählt am Ende der Welt von seinem Leben, den Tragödien, die er durchleben musste und letztendlich auch von dem Monster, welches er einst geschaffen und schließlich sich selbst überlassen hat, nur in diesem ein paar Jahre später wieder zu begegnen. Doch der vermeintliche Teufel selbst stellt sich als ein Wesen voller Sehnsucht heraus und bittet seinen Erschaffer um einen schier unmöglichen Gefallen. Dieses Buch ist so anders, als ich gedacht habe. Obwohl ich schon vorher nicht viel darüber wusste, hatte ich erwartet, dass das Monster und der damit einhergehende Horror eine zentrale Rolle spielen würde. Doch während sich das erste Drittel des Buches sehr auf Viktor konzentriert und die Szenen rund um das Monster nur einen kleinen Teil ausmachen, bewegt sich der zweite Teil um die Erlebnisse des Monsters selbst. Der Ausschluss aus der Gesellschaft und die Unfähigkeit, sich eingliedern zu können, schaffte für mich eine ganz andere düstere Art, auf die ich nicht vorbereitet war - aber die dem Buch für mich kein Abbruch getan haben. Mit Sicherheit keines der leichteren Bücher, auch was das Englisch betrifft, aber definitiv machbar, wenn man ungefähr weiß, worauf man sich einlässt.
ein Klassiker der anderen Art, eine Art kritisches Portrait weißen cis-männlichen Selbstbewusstseins würde ich fast sagen. Auf jeden Fall eine Empfehlung, auch wenn ich die Englische Originalfassung nur Personen mit sehr guten Englischkenntnissen empfehlen würde 😊
I might have enjoyed this more if it wasn't as hyped up. The story in itself is an interesting one but the pacing and writing is just not my cup of tea
Etwas anders, als in meiner Vorstellung, doch insgesamt ist es ein spannendes Werk. Ich bin froh, Frankenstein nun gelesen zu haben und ich die Geschichte kennenlernen konnte.
This book was an fairly unexpected 5 stars read for me. The story of Frankenstein is moving, dark and a great example for the finest gothic romance. The question that I asked myself over and over while reading this literary masterpiece was: “Who ist the real monster? Frankenstein or his creature (Adam)?” Albeit Adam being the obvious “monster” by killing multiple innocent people, Frankenstein played a crucial role in Adam’s vengeful actions. It truly lets you question what is good and what is evil. The characteristics of the romanticist period are also very well implemented in Mary Shelley’s novel. Nature, deeply felt emotions and the correlation to the true nature of human beings are constantly questioned and vividly described. I can recommend Frankenstein to every literature lover who wants to read a great example for first generation romanticist novels!
Let me tell you first: Frankenstein himself is a terrible Human being and faces no consequenses for his foolish actions! Like, none at all. BUT: This is still a very interesting Science Fiction Storyline. And, like most classics, tries to answer/talk about diffrent questions of humanity.

Die Geschichte ist faszinierend, aber der Schreibstil wirkte auf mich teilweise etwas langatmig. Trotzdem hat mich das Monster bewegt – es ist nicht einfach nur ein Monster, sondern ein tragisches Wesen, das nach Liebe und Akzeptanz sucht, aber nur Ablehnung erfährt. Sein Leid war spürbar und ließ mich über die wahre Natur von Gut und Böse nachdenken. Ein Klassiker, der zum Nachdenken anregt, auch wenn er mich nicht komplett fesseln konnte.

Wirklich genau sagen, was ich von diesem Klassiker erwartet habe, kann ich nicht. Ich habe mich auf die Lektüre eingelassen, ohne gross etwas im Kopf zu haben. Neugierig war ich, zu erfahren, wie die ursprüngliche Geschichte, das Original, daherkommt. Wahrscheinlich konnte ich das Buch genau deshalb so sehr geniessen. Überraschenderweise hat mir vor allem Mary Shelleys Sprache sehr gut gefallen. Sie ist eine richtige Vertreterin der Romantik und das spiegelt sich in ihrem berühmtesten Werk durch und durch. Wäre das Buch in unserer Zeit geschrieben worden, wäre "Frankenstein" eher ein actionlastiges Werk mit jugendlichem Helden geworden, der alles daran setzen würde, seine Kreatur zu vernichten. Doch es wie bereits erwähnt, ein Buch aus der Romantik ist, funktioniert es völlig anders und könnte deswegen ein jüngeres Publikum auch eher langweilen. Denn bei Shelley geht es eher um die Darstellung des inneren Konfliktes von Viktor Frankenstein und dessen seelische Zustände. Aber ebenso lässt sie das Monster zu Worte kommen, uns erzählen, was es durchmachen musste. Hier wirft die Autorin spannende und diskussionswürdige Fragen auf. Woher kommt das Böse? Wer ist dafür verantwortlich? Kann ich andere für mein Leid verantwortlich machen? Der Horror des Buches lebt vor allem vom psychologischen Aspekt, nicht von Blut, Gliedmassen oder irgendwelchen Ouija-Brettern. Shelley stellt sich die Frage, wie es ist, mit solch einer Bürde zu leben und auch, wie es ist, eine solche Bürde zu sein. Was hätte nicht alles aus dem Monster werden können? Durch all diese Aspekte wird "Frankenstein" zu einem ruhigen, tiefen und auch erschütternden Roman. Oft hatte ich tatsächlich Mitleid mit dem Monster, auch wenn dies nicht unbedingt gerechtfertigt sein mag. Ein schön geschriebenes, tiefgründiges Werk, das ich aufgrund des fordernden Englisches und des gemächlichen Tempos an eher erfahrene Leser empfehlen kann.

Better than I expected. The beginning was tough, but once the first muder occurs, it really picks up. You can read a lot of things into this and I understand why it's a classic

Honestly, it might just be my stupidity but I didn’t understand the beginning of the book at all (English isn’t my first language by the way) but I started enjoying it afterwards. It was overall quite good. I liked the vibe.
I enjoyed the premise of the story. I loved the themes of science ethics, creation, social ostracization and responsibility. Frankenstein was brilliant and a genius, but irresponsible. The monster was cruel, but he could see the fault in his actions, owning them more than Victor. Is it his fault? Is it society's fault? As much as I loved the themes, I had problems with the pacing and prose. Also, I would have preferred to hear more from the monster; the few glimpses we got added so much more depth to the story. I recommend this book, it is a classic worth a try, especially since there are so many adaptations, which do not cover its depth.
