I definitely enjoyed reading the book because the writing is brilliant and I can completely understand as to why it was shortlisted for Man booker prize. The writing will make you want to keep reading the book and I think that was the only motivation for me to go through this book. However. - I like my books plot driven, when that is not served to me… the book gets on my nerves and I just want it to end. The vague writing style didn’t really make it easy for me. It is the retelling of the Oedipus myth. Something I don’t know anything about… and when I don’t I tend to go through the book to know more/ understand it. But… this myth I don’t know if it really works in this modern setting? I wasn’t able to connect with the characters in any way… maybe it was because of the lack of the backstory… all you know about Gretel is that she is a lexicographer. I thought we will discover/ uncover more about the characters as we progress but nothing, naught, nil. And well… no character personalities… again… no backstory… :| I want to know about the people I am reading. Sorry for being so needy. The constant shifting of the timeline… just got on my nerves… I think if it was told in a linear format, I might have enjoyed reading the book more. But I get why she wanted to keep the narrative as it was… Pick this book up for it’s writing and just it’s writing.
