With the whole country in a state of panic, the killer is growing more confident with each successive execution— Mrs. Ascher in Andover, Betty Barnard in Bexhill, Sir Carmichael Clarke in Churston… But laying a trail of deliberate clues to taunt the proud Hercule Poirot might just be his first mistake.< My first Agatha Christie and definitely not my last. The story was quite interesting even though it seemed to me that the characters were rather detached from the victims of the murders. The emotional part was added later however, when the relatives of the murdered came together with Poirot to figure out who did it. Usually I’m pretty good at figuring out who the perpetrator is but it took me rather by surprise here, which I like. The only thing I have to criticize is that I just didn’t like Captain Hastings, who narrated the story. He seemed to me very arrogant and like he was only interested in a case and didn’t really think about the victims or their families and what they might be feeling. But other than that it was a quite enjoyable murder mystery.
