"What I wouldn’t give to go over there, lift her by her waist, and spin her around. Instead, I grin her way, and she winks." Defenseless Hearts By Meagan Brandy Oh man, I read Defenseless Hearts after reading both Say You Swear and Fumbled Hearts, and this one took the cake for making me feel sorrow and anguish between two characters. It worked out perfectly that reading this book aligned well with my personal life and I didn’t mind the feelings; it was cathartic to a degree. Defenseless Hearts stars Parker (who was also a pretty big character in Fumbled Hearts) and Kenra. If you’ve read F.H. or S.Y.S, you’ll recall Nate – well, Kenra is Nate’s older sister. The premise of this book is a love triangle, however I would say it’s more of a love-hate-love triangle than anything. Kenra has found herself in an abusive relationship and this man, Kellan, is a major jerk and very manipulative. Kenra’s world is heavily dictated for her by the money-is-power mentality, and the expectation to dress the part to look the part of a doting girlfriend/fiancé/wife. Parker and Kenra have spent quite a bit of time together over the years, one-on-one, mainly when Kenra’s fiancé has left her to go out of town and the relationship between the two is so very sweet. Parker adores Kenra, but Kenra has been manipulated and controlled so much over the years, she stops thinking for herself nor does she make decisions with her best interests in mind. The back and forth between Kenra and Parker feels very much like a relationship yo-yo. Many times while reading this book, I wanted to physically take Kenra and shake her by the arms to beg her to SNAP OUT OF IT, WOMAN! Despite these moments, Meagan Brandy’s writing is so well done that I had to continue reading to find out how the story ended. There were several scenes that were like a twist in the plot, and several were heartbreaking. I mean, the sorrow rolling out of this book was palpable, but it was worth it to get to the end, in my opinion. Having read Say You Swear first, out of these three books, I was very glad Meagan Brandy gave us the opportunity to get to know Deaton in Defenseless Hearts. He is Kellan’s younger brother who is also dating Parker’s younger sister, Payton. Deaton is a great character, and I loved everything about him in this book. He is a great boyfriend to Payton and they love each other tremendously. I loved this side story in the book. One of the laugh-outloud quotes from the book I highlighted was this one, said by Lolli (Kalani, from Fumbled Hearts): “There’s a Monroe in my bed, and it’s not the one I’m fuckin’.” This is totally a Lolli quote if there ever was one, and it made me so happy to have her around as much as she was in Defenseless Hearts, since we already got her & Nate’s story in Fumbled Hearts. To wrap up, if you are looking for a well-written romance with all of the “feels” in it, this is the one for you. I will say, out of the three books by Meagan Brandy I mentioned, this one is heavier on the heart than the other two, in my opinion, but also as mentioned – well worth it!
