3,75☆ My second book from KJ Charles, and I really enjoyed it, though it had a few shortcomings for me. Not about the actual story though. That was all really well written and plotted. I just wasn't that emotional about it. The connection to the characters could have been a bit stronger. Still, pretty good book. 10 years ago at Oxford, there was a group of friends called the 7 wonders. They had the time of their lives, until that one night, and the next morning, when one of them turned up dead. Jem never got his degree and now was even fired from his job because of a letter accusing him of being the murderer. He has had enough of living in fear. It's time to finally find out what happened because one of his old friend did it. So, he sets out to talk to each one of them. It isn't really much of an investigation though. There are no (physical) clues to be found, so long after. Jem just asks questions and uncovers a lot of other secrets that might or might not be related. Of course, no one is happy about him stirring up dirt about this old business. The story is told in present and past, with many flashback chapters, which were actually my favorite, especially in the beginning. Their group gave me such good vibes, until well... it's not a fun story. The atmosphere was often sad and gloomy, but rightfully so. There is a romantic subplot, but it's not really a whole romance story. But love and attraction play a central role in the whole story; be it one-sided or otherwise. There is no smut though, just closed door scenes, which fit with the story, but I think just a few more details would have been nice for the emotional connection that was a bit lacking for me. An epilog with a bit more about the romance would also have been nice 👀 The mystery was handled well, and the reveals interesting, but after a certain thing, I did agree with some characters that it might be best not to pursue this further, or at least not go to the police 😅 Jem could be a bit naive at times, or more like I didn't understand how he still saw that one person as his friend 😬 Well, all in all, still a nice book I'd recommend 😌 I am excited to read more from this author (already have 4 more books).
