While I very much liked "Labyrinth Lost" already, "Bruja Born" surpasses the first installment by much in my opinion. The family theme that was a big factor in the first book was enacted in this book in the way I had hoped to see in the first after reading the first few chapters. The relationship between the sisters that I fell in love with in the very first pages of this series gets much more focus and time in this book, as they face most of their problems together. Even their parents have a bigger role. Similarly, the world of brujas in New York gets expanded a lot more than was possible in a story set in Los Lagos. We learn of real people (as in people that are real in that universe) and types of magic we didn't know before and this book really made me appreciate the urban part of the magical world Zoraida Córdova created. The major theme in this book is love and looking at how the romances and relationships one thought would turn to romances turned out in both "Labyrinth Lost" and "Bruja Born" I really like the approach the author has to them. It relies a lot on trope subversion but in a way that plays with different tropes and the ideas you expect while still staying in the realm of not totally being unexpected and being very well founded and realistic. I love this take! Another point I liked is the characters that reappeared from the first book, the roles they were given, and Nova's arc that seems to be stretching through all three of these books. Can't wait to read the suite!
