Blue Ticket von Sophie Mackintosh hat mich vor allem am Anfang wirklich gepackt. Die Grundidee ist außergewöhnlich und zugleich verstörend: Mädchen müssen mit dem Einsetzen ihrer Periode an einer Lotterie teilnehmen, die darüber entscheidet, ob sie ein blaues oder ein weißes Ticket erhalten – und damit letztlich, ob sie später Kinder bekommen dürfen oder nicht. Diese Prämisse fand ich unglaublich spannend, weil sie sofort große Fragen aufwirft: Was macht es mit einem Menschen, wenn eine so grundlegende Lebensentscheidung komplett fremdbestimmt ist? Wie lebt man mit einem Schicksal, das einem ohne Mitspracherecht zugeteilt wird? Gerade dieser gesellschaftskritische Ansatz und die psychologische Wirkung auf die Figuren haben mich anfangs sehr fasziniert. Die düstere, fast beklemmende Atmosphäre des Buches trägt viel dazu bei, dass man unbedingt weiterlesen möchte. Leider konnte das Buch dieses starke Niveau für mich nicht bis zum Ende halten. Ab der Mitte verliert die Handlung etwas an Klarheit, und vor allem bleiben die entscheidenden Fragen offen: Warum ist diese Welt überhaupt so aufgebaut? Wer hat dieses System erschaffen, und was ist der eigentliche Sinn hinter dieser grausamen Entscheidung? Ich hatte gehofft, dass zum Ende hin mehr Hintergründe erklärt werden und die dystopische Welt greifbarer wird. Stattdessen bleibt vieles bewusst vage, was zwar literarisch gewollt sein mag, für mich aber eher unbefriedigend war. Das Ende hat mich deshalb nicht wirklich zufriedengestellt, weil die Geschichte zwar viele starke Themen anreißt – Kontrolle, weibliche Selbstbestimmung, gesellschaftlicher Zwang –, diese aber nicht konsequent zu einem überzeugenden Abschluss führt. Insgesamt ein Buch mit einer sehr starken und originellen Ausgangsidee, das vor allem am Anfang großes Potenzial zeigt, dieses aber zum Ende hin leider nicht ganz einlösen konnte. Daher würde ich es persönlich eher nicht weiterempfehlen.
Das Buch ist eine Dystopie über Mutterschaft, weibliche Solidarität und körperliche Selbstbestimmung. Wenn dir The Handmaid’s Tale gefallen hat, wirst du dieses Buch wahrscheinlich auch mögen (mir persönlich hat es sogar noch besser gefallen). Das Thema Mutterschaft fand ich unglaublich spannend – es wurde hier tiefer und vielschichtiger behandelt als in jedem anderen Buch, das ich bisher gelesen habe. Der Schreibstil war genau mein Ding und hat perfekt zur Protagonistin gepasst. Für knapp 300 Seiten boten die Geschichte und die Figuren eine beeindruckende Komplexität, Mehrdeutigkeit und Tiefe. Ich habe absolut nichts Negatives zu sagen – es war genau mein Buch, und ich werde es definitiv nochmal lesen.
Now don't I love myself a good feminist dytopia. Wow wow wow. This one came warmly recommended by a dear friend of mine, and we all know that those usually turn out to be the best books. Had I heard of "Blue Ticket" before? Hard no. And yet, it was worth every minute I spent with it - also because those were minutes that seemed to just fly by. Calla lives in a country where a woman's right to bear a child is determined by lottery. Blue ticket women will forever stay childless while white ticket women will live picture-perfect lives with their husbands and children. And Calla's ticket is blue. Which seems to not be an issue - until an inquenchable wanting starts to stir in her heart... In fast-moving prose, Sophie Macintosh carries us through the flight of a woman who is trying desperately to live a self-determined life. Chapters are short, developments are rapid, and sisterhood is tested by a totalitarian government that exerts its power through psychological terror only. This book took no time to read. Granted, it is the plot that carries it - the characters remain fairly unreliable, and the worldbuilding is nebulous at best. However, it's the things that aren't said that make this novel such a compelling read. Much like in Cormac McCarthy's "The Road", not knowing what kind of danger is looming is what builds the suspense that kept me so engaged.
