It took me two months to get through this book and there's a good reason why. The first 300 pages drag like hell. For the first 300 pages, everyone in this book is a bumbling idiot. Sorasa is the only one with half a brain cell. It's infuriating to be honest. The only one semi interesting is Erida but I'm not surprised. Victoria writes villains well. The writing is great. It's obvious how much Victoria Aveyard evolved from the Red Queen series. There are little oddities she's had in that series as well but she's come a long way. The plot is engaging, the characters just aren't. Although I really need someone to count how many times she's used hissed, snapped and sneered in this book because I am convinced they appeared at least in every second page. I adore the worldbuilding. I even took pictures of some of the descriptions because they're inspiring. All of the cities are unique to each other and easy to imagine. And it's nice to see how diverse she's made the world. There is more to this world than just Europe and North America and it feels like she at least did some research in that. Like I said, the plot in itself is interesting and the way it's executed would have kept me on my toes if not for the characters. I just wish they didn't make Corayne basically a Chosen One. I hope Victoria deconstructs the trope in the next two installments. Now as to what made me take so long for this book that I couldn't give it four stars. The characters. Sorasa is entertaining, smart and I love that her ruthlessness is shown from the very first time that we see her. I feel like there are sooome small inconsistencies but I chalk that up to realism. Humans are sometimes inconsistent. Dom has so much potential and I know his naivete is supposed to be endearing but he's just going on my nerves. He is centuries old. I don't need him to act like Gandalf, just less like a bumbling tween on their first night at a party. Corayne is okay but between her at the island and the last 160 pages, there is nothing of the smart girl she's constantly referred to as. Things just happen TO her, she barely does anything in that time. Andry is horribly underutilized for someone who was at the massacre. The other three can basically be summarized into: Fun sidekicks but it's obvious why they were introduced late. Honorable for Erida and Taristan who are my favorite little psycho babies whom I love to hate. Especially for Erida, her actions are absolutely understandable and I hope we see more of her descent. And let her die with a fight, not just betrayed by Taristan. Please? I will definitely read BB but I hope that now that the plot has picked up pace and the characters are finally doing something, she will manage to keep up. I just have one wish: Keep the romance out of this. This series doesn't need more straight relationships.

(*probably writing a proper review when its not almost 2am and my poor reader’s heart has started to recover from this ending*) Holy shit, it‘s been a long time since I enjoyed a boon this freaking much and dare I say this Lord of the Rings-vibe series is a breath of fresh air and well known nostalgia in the middle of the current NA heavy High Fantasy trend. Truly loved following this story, it‘s characters and incredibly detailed world.

Well, shit. I know damn well I shouldn't trust Victoria Aveyard, that every damn book ends horrible for the characters. Yet I proceeded to start this unfinished series. My mistake. No but seriously it is awesome. I just... . . . spoilers for the ending . . . I just really hope that V.A. won't be completely heartless and she'll let Sorasa escape. Somehow. So that Coraine isn't alone only with Charlie, if she's even able to find him, if something didn't happen to him. I don't even need Erida and Taristan dead. (Would be nice, but it's not necessary.) I'll be happy if Ronan's killed so Taristan has no more magic. (I'd make Erida happy too but I can overcome that.) Coraine needs to close all remaining spindles and then break the spindle sword - that way Taristan and Erida are left with no hope of opening another portals, there'll be no more help from different realms. As to Erida - she deserves to have all the other kingdoms AND the pirates to break all hell loose upon Galland. Ideally her own people will depose of her. (That's beffiting end for someone who thinks they're better than everybody else and deserve to rule the entire Realm, right?)
