The good news: it is better than the previous volumes 5 and 6. But don't expect too much. This is quite a quick story - a short adventure in Africa, that could be huge if written in a decompressed way. Fortunately Warren Ellis just wanted to make it short - which leaves the characters very little space to breathe. So the X-Men mostly fight or share some bitchy dialogues. Only in very few moments the plot hints some ironic depth about the scope (and why the X-Men get involved in this). Tbh also the art is not that overwhelming, although Kaare Andrews is a solid artist. Luckily Frank D'Armata adds his coloring skills. Bottom Line: If you want to start reading X-Men comics there (still) is no better way to pick up "Astonishing X-Men" by Joss Whedon. This seventh book of the series "Astonishing X-Men" (as well as volumes 5 and 6) however can easily be skipped.
