When Anna's brother and sister in law die in a car crash, she suddenly finds herself responsible for her niece and nephew even though she never wanted kids, and pretty much has to leave her entire life behind to move to the town they live in. And because everything always happens at once, she also almost immediately runs into her soon-to-be-girlfriend Lane. And. Technically, there is a lot going on. There's also her new best friend who's grieving her own loss, and Anna's parents who are (not) dealing with the situation in their own ways, but at parts it felt a bit slow and like not much was happening at all (and there was so. much. watching. Disney DVDs, oh my god). I was almost glad when the kid's homophobic grandmother inevitabely showed up. The part involving her was actually my favourite, not only because there was a lot more action involved after that, but also because I finally felt completely emotionally invested in the story and really cheering for the main character. It's not a bad book by all means, but the pacing was just not for me.
3.5 ⭐ I'm surprised to say this...but I would've enjoyed the story more without the romance. The book was deeper than I expected which was a good and a bad thing. It wasn't what I was expecting but it was enjoyable. I did skip a few pages, because I simply didn't care enough. I think I was just not really in the mood for it and I might reread it eventually. I was really invested in the story with the kids but not in the romance. I did like Lane and Anna but I somehow didn't care about their relationship. I found it really questionable how fast Anna moved on from her ex. It also seemed like the only thing Anna cared about in that relationship was the sex. All Lane and Anna did was make out and have sex. They somehow couldn't have a single conversation without making out. That really really annoyed me, since I personally don't enjoy stuff like that. And it all happened so soon, by like page 50 Anna said she had a crush on her and the were already making out. That's probably a me thing, but I just find things like that extremely annoying and also unrealistic. Cause how can you really like someone if you know basically nothing about them? They did have cute scenes and nice conversation, but for me that was ruined by the constant kissing in between. You can have conversations without constantly kissing or touching each other. All that being said, I still enjoyed it. The font was really small, which worried me at first, but it was really easy to read and get through. I did really like the writing and I'm excited to read more books by the author, hoping to like them even more.
