And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before.

"Ich bin auch weiss - und genau deshalb demonstriere ich. Ich musste es tun. Weil der Rassismus keineswegs Vergangenheit, sondern immer noch verdammt aktuell war. Er war überall und steckte in allem, und die einzigen Leute, die sagten, es sei nicht so, und die Einzigen, die sagten: "Sprich nicht darüber", waren weiss. Hört doch endlich auf zu lügen! (...) Nichts würde sich ändern, solange wir nicht etwas dagegen unternahmen. Wir! Wir Weissen! Wir mussten aufstehen und unsere Stimme erheben, (...)" Für mich ein sehr schönes Zitat, dass die Thematik des Buches in meinen Augen perfekt zusammenfasst: Rassismus. Er ist allgegenwärtig und leider immer noch top aktuell. Rassismus bedeutet nicht nur, dass man seine Meinungen offen austrägt, sondern auch, dass man daneben steht und nichts tut. Zusieht wie Minderheiten für etwas verantwortlich gemacht wurden, wofür sie nichts können. Zusehen wie vor allem Afroamerikaner in den USA Opfer von Polizeigewalt wurden und die weissen Polizisten zu allem Überfluss - trotz ihres Fehlverhaltens - ohne Strafe davonkommen. Genau diese beiden Themen wird hier anhand von zwei Jugendlichen Schülern abwechselnd erzählt. Auf der einen Seite haben wir Rashad, der aufgrund eines Missverständnisses von einem weissen Polizisten - grundlos - zusammengeschlagen wird. Auf der anderen Seite haben wir Quinn, ein weisser, überprivilegierter Schüler, der das Ganze beobachtet hat und seither nicht mehr aus dem Kopf kriegt. Dieses Ereignis löst vor allem bei Quinn einen Prozess aus, bei dem er nicht nur Rassismus, sondern auch sein eigenes Verhalten in Frage stellt. Das Buch ist kein literarisches Meisterwerk, zeigt aber anhand einer einfachen und glaubhaften Geschichte, wie schnell es zu Polizeigewalt kommen kann und welchen Vorurteilen insbesondere dunkelhäutige Amerikaner ausgesetzt sind. Es handelt sich bei "Nichts ist okay!" nicht bloss um eine normale Erzählung, sondern um ein Thema, das den Leser immer wieder zum Nachdenken anregt und ihn auch über sein eigenes Verhalten nachdenken lässt. Empfehlenswerte Lektüre, die man auch gut in der Schule lesen und diskutieren könnte. Mir hat aber dennoch noch das gewisse "Etwas" gefehlt, damit ich 5 Sterne hätte vergeben können.
I ... wow. Rashad gets beaten up buy a cop because he gets mistaken for a shoplifter. Even though he didn't do anything wrong. He ends up with a broken nose and broken rips and Quinn, a guy who happens to go to the very same school and witnessed what happend in front of the shop, ends up thinking about what is right and what is wrong. All American Boys is a beautifully written, extremly important novel which will definately make you mad. So, so mad. It makes you see things from a different perspective and hell, it makes you reconsider wether to trust the police or not. It shows how people can change there minds and how sticking up for things is important. Seriously, the only reason why I didn't tear up at the end was the fact that I was sitting at a bus. All American Boys is a must-read book and absoultely deserves 5*.
