Solid reverse grumpy x sunshine with a idiot Himbo MMC
This was my first book by Cate C. Wells, and I have to say it was a fun read. At first, I had a hard time getting into the story, but then I started to like it — I can't even explain why. Cash is kinda dumb, but in a funny way, which made him kinda adorable. He was so obsessed with and protective of Glenna — I liked that too, even though he definitely showed some toxic masculinity. He’s the perfect example of a Himbo MMC. Cate C. Wells really managed to make it work: in the beginning I hated him, but somehow I started to like him. Glenna was grumpy, and I really enjoy the reverse grumpy x sunshine trope. She’s stubborn and strong and made him work to get her, but I think she has some insecurities she should work out on her own too. This book definitely would have never worked with a doormat FMC. What I didn’t really like was the bully part of the story. I know he just wanted her attention, but it’s still so wrong. I tried to ignore that part, and I can overlook it, because he didn’t want to be mean — he’s just dumb — and from his perspective, some things she saw as bullying were meant completely differently. It was more teasing than horrible bullying. Still, the jump from bully to dating was a bit too fast in my opinion; it wasn’t really worked out. Also, it wasn’t truly enemies to lovers either, because she was the only one hating him, while he adored her. But all in all, the chemistry between them was good, and the spice was spicing. The other characters were written pretty well and felt authentic. I especially liked Jesse and Brice — I’m intrigued by books with them as main characters. It would be interesting to get to know them more, as they are more on the quiet and shy side. I also got interested in Shay and Kellum’s story, because some things were implied in this book, so I’m gonna read Hitting the Wall now too — and Dina’s and Heavy’s love story. And the book was funny too — I laughed a few times, it was witty, and the banter was good. One thing I have to criticise is that I found the plot a bit confusing and weak with the whole Del Willis thing. But I read the book for the romance, so it didn’t matter that much. Also, I didn’t like how present her ex-boyfriend was — I hated that Glenna kinda compared Cash and him all the time in her head. Yes, all in all, it was nothing spectacular and kinda filled with clichés, but I still really enjoyed it. The author took a mundane situation and made it interesting — I couldn’t stop reading.
4,5 ⭐ everybody and their three-legged dog has been raving about this on the romance book sub reddit... and they were very much right! did i expect to enjoy the romance between a level-headed photographer and the embodyment of the term 'redneck' this much? no. was it delightful? send the truck nuts signal, because it absolutely, a 100% was. i get it now. thank you, reddit.
