this book had me smirking and swooning in public places. Release Date: 1st November. This cat and mouse game but who is the cat and who is the mouse was doing things to me and I had the best time with this book for the first 20%. I enjoyed Harlow desperate to solve the murder case of her best friend and deciding to stalk the man she believes to be the murder: Cash Fox. This man was making me faint and swooning and I advice to not read this with people around you. The amount of times I smirked or visibly reacted to one of his lines. Embarrassingly often. But I would have wanted him to have a tad more depth to his character. He felt a bit bland and shallow. The first 20% I was in heaven and was sure this will be another 4 if not 5 star rating. But there just are things I can’t overlook and things that really put me off. First of all - a more personal dislike that didn’t influence my rating. But I need to mention it nonetheless: The smut Even though we started promising - it didn’t do it for me. For one single reason: every time the word daddy was voiced… I visibly cringed. I just hate smut with daddy kink and this one sadly had tons. So even though the smut was well written and some really hot stuff in theory. It wasn’t it for me and I couldn’t enjoy it. I actually had to skip some parts of some scenes just cause I couldn’t take it. It throws me out of my mood. Moaning „daddy do this and that“ or „be a good girl for daddy“ and „your ass belongs to daddy“…. makes me want to vomit. So sadly I was not living for that smut. BUT to be fair - if daddy kink gets you going then this will be heaven for you because it’s otherwise really well written. Then the next thing I’m still struggeling with how to handle it. It’s how characters were introduced or rather with what attributes. Almost every character, if not everyone, was introduced with mentioning their skin color. And I am not a fan of that. It’s something totally unnecessary to mention in my personal opinion. It is not necessary to introduce every character to me as a white man. Or a group of white man. I am tad conflicted here. I believe it’s not something you need to mention as the first noticed aspect about a person. It doesn’t matter what skin color they have. When you meet someone for the first time there are hundreds of things you could mention about them. Is their skin color really the first thing you need to comment on? Another thing that conflicts me even more is that the only [ at least I am pretty sure of it, but if I’m wrong tell me and I’m sorry ] character in the entire book that was black - was the bodyguard. And I don’t think that I need to comment on that further. I’m really not a fan of that for several reasons. And my last criticism and the one that mainly influenced my rating, is the progress of the plot. It did have a kinda weird pace to it. Kinda slow and well paced at the beginning but after the first 20% it kinda crashed and became super slow or rather uneventful. Except for some really inconsequential fights and discussions between Harlow and Cash. They never talked about shit. Just fucked and then went on as if nothing happened. But the aspect about their fight still stands and was never resolved or really talked about. And even some bigger plot aspect where resolved fast and inconsequential…. The end conflict too was somehow not really of a relevant impact in the end when you consider how easy and with how less effort it was then resolved in the span of a few pages. So to sum this up: it was a super fun and entertaining read and I really enjoyed the initial dynamic between Harlow and Cash even though I had wished for that to last longer and a bit more of an realistic and better paced and in depth plot. But in general a fun read. Except the whole color mentioning and representation. Hate that. But if you would take the story idea, give the mmc a bit more depth and layers, change the way characters are perceived and outlined and finally focus a bit more on a flowing, consistently developing plot - you would have a pretty great book. But it sadly was only decent the way it is. The last half would sadly only be 2 stars but due to the fact that I had a pretty damn good time with the first 20% it still gets 3 stars cause I can’t pretend that didn’t happen even though in my memory the bad aspects overshadow the good atm. 3
