SPOILER: Die Tropes hier sind ganz klar Miscommunication, He falls first, rivals to Lovers und Slow Burn.

I am not usually a fan of the concept of the love interest seemingly being a dick to the protagonist or in general until we find out that he has always liked her, but Ali Hazelwood has a way of writing this trope where it's consistently very obvious to the reader what is going on with the love interest, even when the protagonist is left wondering. I think Ali Hazelwood could write the tropes I hate most, and I would still end up loving it. Dr. Bee Königswasser is kind of stuck in her career: She is working for a boss who is a bit of an incompetent dick and her recent grant proposals have all been rejected. So when she gets the opportunity to be co-lead on a NASA collaboration, she is really happy - until she finds out who the other co-lead is: Levi Ward, the guy who everyone knew back in grad school had found her physically revolting and also scientifically subpar. Still, this is too good of an opportunity to pass up, even if, upon revival, it seems like all her fears have become reality, and Levi is sabotaging her work. But with time, she finds out that not only is something else going on, but she might also like the man Levi has grown into since grad school. I adore Ali Hazelwood's writing style, I do love antagonistic relationships that turn into friendship and/or love (but I want it sold to me, and Ali Hazelwood is doing that really well), I love stories about women in STEM (or science in general), I love mutual pining (and oh boi do they pine in this one), and I really enjoyed the way Ali Hazelwood framed the romance through a career-related plot (I think I might even find this one better than the one in "The Love Hypothesis", mostly because I find she has done a better job with the antagonist in this one). But as a multilingual scientist myself I have to say: If Bee did all of her (higher) education in English since she was 16 years old, she would not be writing scientific stuff in German unconsciously. It is totally possible that she was thinking in German for the words in between, but all of the science language will have 100% been in English. I, who live in Germany, sometimes struggle to talk to my German scientist friends about science in German, because I will use all of the technical terms in English, the language in which I learned them and also use them on a day to day basis. I have to spend a lot of time on the internet (most of it on Wikipedia switching languages on the relevant topics, because an ordinary dictionary will not do) to translate anything scientific from one language to the other, so Bee Königswasser will not do it on accident. There is no way. Some of the professors can switch more easily, but that's because they're interacting with the material in both languages all the time. We have no reason to believe that Bee ever talked to anyone about neurosciences in German, and since she lives and works in the US and most papers are published in English, even in Germany, it is very likely she would never have needed or even had the possibility to do so. Very small pet peeve, I know, but if Ali Hazelwood can be particular about how academia is portrayed in fiction, I can be particular about how multilingualism is portrayed. Still, this does not change anything about how I liked the book. I enjoyed myself tremendously, as I enjoy Ali Hazelwood's writing style and the way she approaches relationship dynamics in fiction, and she hasn't led me wrong yet. Well, except for "Cruel Winter with You", but I as short-story-writing and novel-writing are two different skill sets, I don't mind that too much.
