When April and Leo’s house burns in the middle of the night, they escape with their two young children and the quiet knowledge that the fire is not the only thing threatening their family. Sarah Damoff hat es mal wieder geschafft! Nachdem sie schon in “The Bright Years” das umfassende und berührende Porträt einer Familie gezeichnet hat, in der Geheimnisse eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt haben, gelingt ihr dieses Meisterstück auch in “The Burning Side”. Alles beginnt mit einem Hausbrand, bei dem April, Leo und ihre beiden Kinder über Nacht alles verlieren. Sie ziehen vorübergehend zu Aprils Eltern, um überhaupt ein Dach über dem Kopf zu haben – und schnell wird klar, dass nicht nur Aprils und Leos Haus in Trümmern liegt, sondern auch ihre Ehe. Nach und nach nähern wir uns den beiden und ihren Perspektiven an, dazu kommt die Perspektive von Deb, Aprils Mutter, die gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann Billy auch so einige Lasten (und Geheimnisse) zu tragen hat… Am Ende entsteht so ein unglaublich komplexes Bild einer unperfekt-perfekten Familie, die einen – wie auch schon die Brights (aus dem ersten Buch) – nicht loslässt. Die Figuren sind so real und nah, man fühlt alles mit ihnen mit, was für mich wieder das eigentliche Meisterstück des Buches ist. Plus eine unglaublich schöne, besondere Sprache – einfach wow.
