Forest of Souls

Ich bin wieder einmal hin- und hergerissen, ob ich 3 oder 4 Sterne vergeben soll. Letztendlich habe ich mich für 3 Sterne entschieden, weil mir einfach ein paar Sachen fehlten, obwohl mir das Buch mit weiterem Fortschritt bis zum Schluss immer besser gefiel. Am Anfang fand ich es ein wenig verwirrend, wo welches Land tatsächlich ist und wie genau der Wald die Länder trennt. Vielleicht haben mich da die Karten in anderen Büchern etwas zu sehr verwöhnt - aber irgendwie konnte ich mir die Beschreibung nicht richtig vorstellen oder ich habe einfach zu unaufmerksam gelesen. Eine Karte wäre bei diesem schönen Buch wirklich hilfreich gewesen. Wobei das Buch nicht nur optisch sehr schön ist, wie z.B. das Cover und die Illustrationen bei den Kapitelanfängen. Um manches besser zu verstehen gibt es gleich zu Anfang ein Glossar mit vielen Beschreibungen zur Magie, den Ländern, etc. Zurück zur Geschichte. Auch wenn es sehr angenehm zu lesen war, konnte ich mich erst mal nicht so richtig reindenken. Am Kopfkino mangelte es nicht, aber irgendwie packte es mich nicht so richtig. Die Charaktere interessant, das Setting interessant... trotzdem war ich nicht bei der Sache. Vor allem, wenn es um die Länder/Völker und deren Konflikte ging, verlor ich stellenweise ein wenig den Faden, weil ich mir nie so richtig vorstellen konnte, welches Land sich wo in etwa befand, wo angrenzte und was jetzt das Problem war. Die ganzen Charaktere sind ok. Protagonisten, Antagonisten, Nebencharaktere, sonstiges Beiwerk - alles da. Mit den meisten bin ich nicht übermäßig warm geworden, aber besonders abgeneigt bin ich auch nicht. Erst mit der Zeit kommt eine leichte Wärme auf und ich muss gestehen, dass der arrogante Theyen sogar mein Lieblingscharakter wurde. Der ständige Schlagabtausch zwischen der Protagonistin Sirscha und ihm wird im Laufe des Buches zu einem Highlight für mich. Der Gruselfaktor. ENDLICH ein Buch, wo es dann doch mal auch ein wenig gruseliger/eigenständiger wurde im Vergleich zum sonstigen YA Fantasy Zeugs. Das war letztendlich für mich ein großes Plus. UND, dass es nicht gleich um irgendwelche Liebesgeschichten und Dreiecksbeziehungen ging. Nun ja, eigentlich gab es davon sogar gar nichts, sondern einfach nur Freundschaften - welch eine Abwechslung!!! Dankeschön! Und falls es im Laufe der Reihe irgendwann doch noch eine Liebelei geben sollte... von mir aus gerne. Aber ich wurde davon im ersten Band verschont. Auch eine Abwechslung. Trotz der 3 Sterne war das Buch für mich durchaus lesenswert und ich freue mich auf die Fortsetzung. Also doch 4 Sterne? Mal sehen. Die Geschichte ist steigerungsfähig.

Somehow, Sirscha restores Saengo to life and, unveiled as the first soulguide in a long time, Sirscha is called into the heart of the Dead Wood, an ancient forest possessed by souls, to meet the Spider King. He tells her that she is the only one who can tame the growing Dead Wood. Sirscha has to learn to master her abilities as fast as possible to preserve the peace between the kingdoms and to save Saengo life from the illness the Dead Wood infected her with. I feel like this book had a lot of potential that wasn't wasn't used as fully as possible. The Dead Wood creates a really spooky atmosphere and the idea behind souls trapped in the trees was very interesting and makes this book for the fall/spooky season. The plot felt very slow and it was way into the second half of the book that I really got excited for the first time. I like the characters, although there is no character I really LOVE. What I love is the friendship between Sirscha and Saengo, it is so pure and heart-warming and true and possibly my favorite element of the book. The magic system is intriguing but a little bit to vague. I would've liked to see more of it and to get more information about it overall. The last quarter of this book really saved it for me, we get action and the plot develops in an intriguing way, and the ending is great. I can't belive I have to wait so many months until I can read the sequel.

Forest of Souls ist eine spannende Fantasygeschichte, welche in eine neue Welt führt. Das Cover ist ein absoluter Traum und ein totaler Hingucker. Ich habe die Geschichte auf Englisch gelesen, was ab und zu ein wenig schwierig war, da es nicht immer ganz einfach geschrieben ist. Das Buch geht um geheime Kräfte von Schamanen und das Entdecken des Ichs. Die Geschichte bietet Spannung, Magie und Unterhaltung. Das Einzige, was mir ein wenig gefehlt hat, war die Romantik. Auch war mir beim Lesen bei einer bestimmten Szene nicht klar, was geschehen ist. Die Welt von Forest of Souls ist einfach traumhaft und man kann sich wirklich in diese andere Welt hineinversetzen. Man fiebert mit der Protagonistin mit, welche versucht, ihre Freundin und ihre Welt zu retten. Was ich gerne gewusst hätte, als ich das Buch begonnen habe, dass es einen zweiten Teil und sogar dritten Teil geben wird. Ich bin davon ausgegangen, dass dieses Buch in sich abgeschlossen ist, aber so ist es nicht. Das Buch kann ich allen Fantasyfans, welche gern in eine fremde Welt mit Magie und Kräften eintauchen, extrem empfehlen.

This books sounds deliciously creepy, so I wanted to read it for Halloween! It definitely has a very creepy spider and some dark soul-related magic and was a very nice read for late October. The protagonist is Sirscha, who is a soldier and also secretly the pupil of the Queen's head spy. Since she is an orphan with no real future, she pours all of her energy into training and has high hopes to be chosen. However, all her plans are messed up when she is attacked by shamans - magic users that are forbidden in her country - and her best friend Saengo dies in the fight. It becomes confusing when Saengo suddenly comes back to life and Sirscha's eyes betray the glow of a shamanborn all of a sudden. What follows is a summon to the Dead Wood and its residing Spider King who is responsible to keep the peace between the different countries. The book is full of breathtaking action scenes and political schemes. Sirscha is a fighter and also blessed with more common sense than I expected from a YA novel, to be honest. She knows when she can act impulsively and she always tries to figure out what the events happening mean for the grand scheme of things. It feels like she is the kind of protagonists that other YA fantasies want to achieve desperately, but fail to do so. There is also no unnecessary love story, instead it features a strong friendship between Sirscha and Saengo, which I loved so much! More books should do that! I also really enjoyed the world building. There are different magic systems and three different countries which have their own relation ship to those magic users. There is also the mysterious and spreading Dead Wood that only the Spider King can survive. There are many twists that I liked, but I would have loved to learn more about the world. I also wish the ending wouldn't have produced quite so many more questions instead of answers. That I can forgive, though, since it is only the first book. I liked Forest of Souls a lot, mostly because of its refreshing characters, the suspenseful plot and its fascinating world! Would recommend it to anyone who likes YA fantasy and wants to read something that doesn't follow the old cliches and tropes.
