Let me start by saying I love Chinese culture, language and history so much that I studied it in university, so this will be biased. Kylie Lee Baker created a highly immersive, vividly written story that makes the reader feel, like they are on an adventure with the characters. Zilan, a teenage girl, who lives in an impoverished village in the South of China dreams of becoming a royal alchemist, even though she is a member of the merchant class. Zilan already practices alchemy to make money to help her family, but it's illegal. She is able to bring people back from the dead and has earned a bit of reputation for her successes. When the time for Zilan's imperial exams comes, she travels to the capital, along with her cousins Wenshu and Yufei, to compete against the best alchemists in the country, attracting the attention of the royal family. Most interestingly, the Crown Prince, Li Hong, approaches Zilan for help because he fears he is about to be assassinated. There is so much going on in this story, but it's easy to follow and I really grew to love these characters and can't wait to read the next book of this duology. I really enjoyed the alternate view of the tang dynasty that was done in incredible detail and the drama surrounding the royal family. The death alchemy creates a high stakes and the characters are also wonderfully flawed and relatable. I would recommend to go into the story blindly and let yourself be transported into a treacherous court full of political intrigue, backstabbing royals, and alchemists who can create gold that makes you immortal.
Ich mochte das Buch und die Idee dahinter. Es gab so viele Twists und Turns, die ich nicht vorhergesehen hatte und war damit durchaus spannend. Das Buch folgt einer alternativen Version der chinesischen Geschichte und unserer Protagonistin Zilan, einer Alchemistin, auf ihrem Weg zu Ansehen. Mit den Charakteren konnte ich mich leider nicht gut verbinden. Zilan ist auf der einen Seite selbstbewusst und durchsetzungsstark, was mir schon in ersten Szene des Buches noch gut gefiel (das war in ihrem Arbeitsumfeld und manche Kunden sind einfach dreist). Im Laufe der Story gab es aber so viele Momente, wo sie einfach nur maßlos unfreundlich war. Ich dachte mir so oft, dass sie sich das Leben einfach selbst schwer macht, weil sie mit sämtlichen Menschen so mies umgeht. Kein Wunder, dass sie das ausstrahlt und von anderen ebenso behandelt wird. Das fand ich auf Dauer leider echt anstrengend. Kill them with kindness, Zilan. Der Prinz war allerdings das exakte Gegenteil davon, aber ebenso anstrengend. Alles in allem, mochte ich das Buch. Die Story und die Wendungen waren gut gemacht und unterhaltsam. Durchaus eine Empfehlung, auch wenn mich die Charaktere nicht ganz begeistern konnten. Ich bin manchen YA Büchern einfach entwachsen.
Es gibt solche und solche YA-Geschichten. Diese hier war eine, die mir nicht ganz so gut gefallen hat. Die Story zu konstruiert und oberflächlich, dazu ging alles zu leicht und die Figuren waren mitunter sehr kindlich und naiv. Das hat bei Young Adult definitiv seine Daseinsberechtigung, ich habe es aber lieber ein bisschen jugendlich-erwachsener.
I love the concept of Alchemy and AltHistory stories, and this book combines these two perfectly. Set in an alternate Tang Dynasty where Alchemy is a thing, Zilan is poor and doing her best to get by - including necromancy. So she and her cousins sign up for the trials to become a Royal Alchemist at court. If you now think 'Blood of Stars' vibe, you're right. Just way more blood and way less stars.
There's also the Prince -cinnamon roll par excellence - and the evil Empress. Oh, and Monsters and family secrets. All these things combined give a really thrilling tale that you can't put down. It takes a little while for the pace to pick up, but when it does - oh man. The last couple of chapters will leave you breathless and screaming. The world is rich and fully built, and the magical system is so deep that I'm sure there will be more to uncover in future books. I genuinely loved it and it was just short of a 5 star highlight. 4,5/5 stars Thank you @netgalley and @hodderbooks for the eARC.
Dark Fantasy im alten China: Langsamer Start, rasante zweite Hälfte, wenig Romance
Ich habe einige Seiten gebraucht, um mit diesem Buch warm zu werden. Am Anfang ging die Geschichte sehr langsam voran, in der zweiten Hälfte umso schneller. Das letzte Drittel klebte ich förmlich an den Seiten, auch wenn das Finale dann wieder ziemlich vorhersehbar war. Zwischendurch aber immer wieder gute Plot Twists und insgesamt eine richtig coole Story. Ein halber Stern Abzug, da mir die ein oder andere Sache nicht gefallen hat. Was ich ohne zu spoilern sagen kann, ist, dass mir an der ein oder anderen Stelle das Setting bzw. die historisch-kulturelle Perspektive nicht konsequent erschien. Bspw. spielt es eine Rolle, dass die Protagonistin einen Vater aus „Schottland“ hat, Schottland gab es aber zu der Zeit in der das Buch spielt (775 n.Chr.) noch gar nicht. Außerdem war damals in China die Zeitrechnung auch eine ganz andere, es ist also irgendwie unpassend, wenn die Figuren von sich selbst sagen, sie leben in 775 n.Chr. Empfehlung :)

Die Arbeit der Alchemisten erinnert mich sehr an das Spiel "Little Alchemy", und das meine ich absolut positiv! Der Hauptcharakter Zilan kommt in einigen Szenen etwas forsch/unfreundlich rüber. Aber nichts, was sie unsympathisch erscheinen lässt. Die Gespräche zwischen den Geschwistern sind oft von leichtem Humor gekennzeichnet, was man nicht erwarten würde aber sehr erfrischend ist! Es gab einige interessante Plot Twists mit einem tollen Ende! Wer auf englisch liest und vielleicht Probleme hat, sich in einer nicht-westlich angelehnten Welt zu orientieren, dem kann ich dieses Buch empfehlen. Es ist meiner Meinung einfach und verständlich geschrieben, sodass man keine (kulturellen) Verständnisprobleme haben sollte. Eine Geschichte wie diese habe ich noch nie zuvor gelesen. China zur Zeit der Tang Dynastie war für mich etwas völlig Neues und daher umso interessanter und spannender. Alchemisten mit magischen Kräften machten aus einem Geschichtsroman eine einzigartige Fantasy Story. Der Schreibstil der Autorin war sehr angenehm. Sie wusste genau, wie man gut gestreut Plot Twists einsetzt, denn die haben mich allesamt überrascht. Zwischendurch hätte die Handlung aber doch etwas mehr Spannung vertragen können. Es zog sich doch sehr. Leider habe ich auch manche Szenen nicht ganz verstanden und zweifelte etwas an der Sinnhaftigkeit des Plots. Auch ist mir der Kronprinz als Charakter viel zu blass und passiv gewesen. Er hatte keinerlei Persönlichkeit und wurde erst zum Ende des Buches selbst aktiv. Als Gegenpart zur Protagonistin Zilan hätte er wirklich etwas einnehmender sein können. Trotz aller Kritik hatte ich Spaß beim Lesen und bin auch gespannt, was in der Fortsetzung noch alles passieren wird. Vor allem auf Charakterebene sehe ich noch großes Potenzial für mehr Tiefgründigkeit. Außerdem hoffe ich, dass ein paar Plotlücken und offene Fragen geklärt werden können.
