Thus speaks Pygmy, one of a handful of young adults from a totalitarian state sent to the United States, disguised as exchange students, to live with typical American families and blend in, all the while planning an unspecified act of massive terrorism. Palahniuk depicts Midwestern life through the eyes of this thoroughly indoctrinated little killer, who hates us with a passion, in this cunning double-edged satire of an American xenophobia that might, in fact, be completely justified. For Pygmy and his fellow operatives are cooking up something big, something truly awful, that will bring this big dumb country and its fat dumb inhabitants to their knees.

read in german ("Bonsai") Der Plot um eine Gruppe von Austauschschülern, die in die USA einreisen, um dort das kapitalistische System zu stürzen, ist sehr interessant. Es wird nicht verraten, aus welchem Land die Schüler ursprünglich kommen - dies lässt sich auch nicht aus ihren Namen ableiten - klar ist nur, dass sich um ein kommunistisches Regime handelt. Die gebrochene Sprache empfand ich am Anfang als ein wenig schwierig, aber es ging immer besser je weiter ich mich rein gelesen hatte. Was mich letztlich aber verleitet hat, nur zwei Sterne zu vergeben, war eindeutig das Ende des Buches. Es kommt sehr rasant daher, der Twist ist nicht besonders glaubwürdig und auch die Auflösung hat etwas von "Ich hatte nur noch zwei Seiten übrig und alles musste da drauf passen." Eigentlich schade, denn das ganze hätte ein tolles offenes Ende haben können, ohne sich in allzu viel Kitsch zu verlieren.
