Thanks to HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for allowing me to read this e-arc before publication day. How to Lose a Lord in Ten Days In this regency era take on how to lose a guy in 10 days we follow Lydia as she has to navigate her way out of an unwanted marriage proposal by highly respected bachelor Sir Ashford. When overhearing him talking to his friend about his superficial views on marriage and women she‘s certain that he‘s not the one she wants to spend her life with, but refusing the proposal will only end in hurting her and her family‘s reputation. When she is invited to spent a week with him and other society members at his cousin‘s country estate she comes up with a plan to make him withdraw the proposal. She has 10 days to make it happen before the engagement will be announced at the final ball of the season. I thoroughly enjoyed this take on the well-known romantic comedy movie which is not one of my favorites (but reading this book made me want to go back and give it a rewatch). I admire that the author was able to write something lighthearted but also go deeper into this era‘s issues with love and marriage. It shed light on so many topics as queerness, women losing all of their little independence when deciding to marry, marrying for love but then realizing your partner is not what you thought him/her to be etc. There were so many layers to this seemingly simple concept. In the beginning I had some difficulties getting into the story with longer chapters, getting to know so many characters when they got to the estate and keeping up with their age and who was interested in whom. As the story progressed I absolutely enjoyed the amount of different characters and the nuances they brought to the table. The second half of the book was so much fun with everything that was going on and the added mystery of the theft. It was funny, witty and much deeper than I had anticipated. I’m no expert on the regency era but it felt authentic enough. This was my first book by Irwin and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.
