Okay, I guess
This was okay nothing more, nothing less. The story was pretty interesting and personally I haven't read much post-plague setting books so I enjoyed this but this books weak point in my opinion is that everything is kept pretty surface level. Cruel and absolutely horrible things have happened to some characters and I think this book could have talked about that and what that does to a person way more. The relationships between characters were good but again the book could have gone deeper. I think I just went into it with wrong expectations. I expected to see way more of the world and what the plague did to it but the book was much more of an "who did it" mystery set in that world. I was kind of rolling my eyes a bit at the passage with the city inspector who believes that rats carry the plague where you as the reader are I guess supposed to feel smart because you know the inspector is right because we know rats are in fact able to spread diseases. The writing was okay but nothing mind blowing either. I really liked the conclusion of the plot/the reveal of the "who did it" but again it could have been explored deeper in my opinion. This book is really just okay in every aspect so give it a go but don't expect it to knock you out of your boots. I guess it is at least a good sign that my biggest critique is just wanting more.
Absolute Leseempfehlung!
The first 90% of this book were amazing but after the mystery was solved the book went on too long, the motivation change of the main character came out of nowhere to me and the ending felt like a let down. Generally enjoyed it a whole lot though so its still 4 stars.

I've read this masterpiece in less than 24 hours and I enjoyed it immensely. The writing es exeptional and it is almost impossible to put this book down. The protagonist was the first thing that stood out: he's male. We don't get enough male POVs in young adult fantasy and to read this story from Cas' point of view was very refreshing. He has a kind heart an a rough outerior, even after all he lived trough. His "abilities" make him even more interesting even though I would have loved to get to know how they came about - it's all very mysterious and remains unexplained. I loved how the relationships were displayed - the platonic and not so platonic ones. Cas loves his brother very much and I enjoyed their - sometime childish - interactions. Then there is Lena, a very beautiful historian. Firstly, she is a historian, isn't that great? So she provides with very interesting facts and funny stories troughout their adventures together. She is also very kind, brave and emotional. I loved that she doesn't hide behind those emotions, but shows and explains them. This book is a standalone and the story doesn't lack any explaining or depth - thats extraordinary. I was on the edge of my seat most of the time, because I wanted to know who had atempted an assasination. When everything was revealed, it left me very surprised and pleased with the plot - I would never have guessed at this outcome. The relationship between Cas and Lena mangages almost without anything "physical" and I that made me enjoy it even more. Don't get me wrong, I loooove some smut as much as the next girl, but it's nice to be reminded that it isn't necessary to write a great love story. I especially loved, that this story revolved around a kind of "true story" the author discovered while researching about the plague. Even with Covid19 the topic of plague was not an unpleasant one, because it is a lot different to our circumstances today. As you can see there is not one reason to not read this book - So what are you waiting for?
