Written in Red: Anne Bishop (A Novel of the Others, Band 1)
von Anne Bishop
Düster-hoffnungsvolle Urban Fantasy
What happened to the dinosaurs? The Others happened to the dinosaurs.

2.5 stars. It has been so hard to finish this one. I found it boring to death, but for a few moments. I liked the worldbuilding and some Meg-moments, when she takes care of a puppy for example. But that is due to the fact that I love dogs :D Also her process of integration into the terra indigene society was very appealing and well done. What I didn't enjoy was the lack of a solid plot, that made the book a bit too long and boring. It was more focused on characterization, putting the basis for the sequels hopefully. In the end it was slacking off too much for my tastes.

Lovely characters and an interesting setting: a courtyard where "the Others" live. The Others are creatures who are superior to us humans and can be shape shifters, vampires, elements, ... My favorites were the ponies though who are named after natural phenomenons like for example thunder or hurricane and can cause exactly that ;) And in this courtyard comes our heroine, a girl who receives prophecies whenever her skin is cut and who decided to run away from an institution in which she was kept because of her skin's value. But the Others are a dangerous species to live among which she soon discovers, too, but with her kind heart and sympathetic personality she manages to enchant not only us readers ;) but there's a dark prophecy she has to face... All in all a very nice story which works so well because of the amazing characters. The story itself would be just okay if it wasn't for all these wonderfully drawn people (and other things) living in the courtyard. And there were a few things which didn't seem too logical to me but the author created such an amazing setting and the idea of the Others living openly in a world with humans was really refreshing, too, so that I could easily overlook these minor flaws and delve right into part two of the series! I'm a little bit skeptical concerning the love story we already got a hint of in book one because so far I don't feel to comfortable with this particular inter-species relationship and it seems wrong to me but maybe the author works on it in the next book to make it look more human-human? I guess I'll find out soon ;)

It took quite some time to get into the story but after that I couldn't bring myself to put the book down. What a pleasant surprise. Can't wait to begin the second book in this series.
