Dimmed Shine: “Woven by Gold” Struggles to Dazzle in a Familiar Fantasy Realm

“Woven by Gold” by Elizabeth Helen is the second installment in her fae fantasy series, but unfortunately, it falls short of the magic that characterized previous entry. While the novel has moments of promise, it ultimately struggles with pacing, character development, and an overreliance on familiar tropes. As with Helen‘s previous works, the world-building in “Woven by Gold” is a high point. The fae realm is richly described, with intricate details that bring the setting to life. The author‘s ability to create a vivid, atmospheric world is evident, and fans of lush fantasy landscapes will find themselves transported to a realm where magic and danger are intertwined. However, despite the well-crafted setting, the story itself feels lackluster. The plot follows a fairly predictable trajectory, hitting the usual beats of a fantasy romance without adding much in the way of innovation or surprise. The narrative drags in several places, with long stretches of exposition and introspection that slow the pacing to a crawl. By the time the story picks up momentum, it’s hard not to feel that it’s too little, too late. Character development is another area where “Woven by Gold” falters. The protagonist, while sympathetic, lacks the depth and complexity needed to carry the story. Her motivations are clear, but her growth throughout the novel is minimal, making her journey feel stagnant. The love interest, who is meant to be a brooding and mysterious figure, comes off as one-dimensional, with little to distinguish him from countless other characters in similar roles across the genre. Their romance, which should be the emotional core of the story, feels more like a checkbox than a truly compelling relationship. When it comes to the ‘spice’ factor, “Woven by Gold” does offer some steamy moments, but they fail to elevate the overall narrative. These scenes feel disconnected from the broader emotional arc, lacking the intensity or chemistry that could have made them more impactful. Instead, they come across as obligatory additions rather than organic developments in the story. Overall, “Woven by Gold” is a rather disappointing read that fails to live up to the potential of its intriguing premise and well-crafted world. While Elizabeth Helen’s writing is polished and her world-building is strong, the predictable plot, underdeveloped characters, and lackluster romance make it difficult to fully engage with the story. For fans of the series, it may be worth a read to see where the story goes, but for others, it’s likely to be a forgettable entry in the crowded field of fae fantasy. With that in mind, “Woven by Gold” earns a middling 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Okay this was definitely weaker than book 1. It‘s just annoying as a reader to know so so much already (basically everything?), while witnessing those stupid characters being naive to no end, it‘s painful. I thought it was gonna be a trilogy, but now I‘ve heard it‘s gonna be like 5 books?! I cannot do 5 books with Rosalina basically begging those guys to finally do her. No way.
