When You Disappeared might not be my favorite John Marrs book, but let me tell you, it’s still such a good read and deserves the 4.25 stars! It starts off a little slow, but honestly, it needs to. You have to get to know the family, understand Catherine’s story, and see how unbelievably strong and amazing she is. I mean, this woman goes through so much, and you just find yourself rooting for her the entire time. And then there’s Simon, his side of the story is so complicated, but it adds so much depth to everything. Plus, seeing how the kids adapt to everything? It’s heartbreaking but so necessary to the story. The way everything unfolds just slowly tears you apart. You think you’re fine, and then another layer hits you, and you’re just sitting there like, “How is this even happening?” It’s one of those books that makes you feel all the emotions, and I was here for it. What really stuck with me, is how the book shows how self-pity can totally destroy you if you let it. B b ut at the same time, it’s also about finding the strength to get back up and keep going. Catherine’s journey is such a powerful reminder that even when life feels like it’s falling apart, you can still find a way to rebuild and be happy. It’s messy and hard, but it’s possible, and I love that message. I will say, the slower start might not be for everyone, but trust me, it’s worth it. By the end, you’re just sitting there, staring at the last page, thinking about everything that happened and how far the characters have come. I‘m sure it‘s one of those stories that stays with you.
