What They Always Tell Us is a powerful, beautiful and emotional book. It's not flashy but quiet and intense. Rating: 4.5/5 The book takes us into the lives of James and Alex, brothers who have drifted apart with time, even more so after a terrible event. We are experiencing the story through the eyes of James and Alex, finding out about both their feelings and seeing everything through both eyes. It's a coming of age story and a coming out story (but it's not the main focus of the book) which takes us on an emotional rollercoaster ride. I immediately connected with Alex and wanted to hug him, wanted to make the world better for him. While sometimes he felt a little bit too angsty for me I could understand his feelings and what he was going through all too well and therefore the way he was treated made me even angrier. At first I couldn't sympathize with James but the more you read of his perspective the more you could understand him and that he really cares about his brother, that he was angry at himself for never doing anything but not yet being able to admit it to himself. And then we see Alex and Nathen's friendship blossom and then turn into something much more and you simply feel for them and want them to be able to show everyone how they feel for each other, that they shouldn't have to hide. But their world wasn't ready for them yet, still too caught up in their own prejudices and hate. We're not there yet either but maybe we will be at some point. One thing that bothered me about the book was that sometimes I didn't know for sure if the author was going for first person or third person narration. When he wrote sentences "Mom" and "Dad" it felt odd and out of place of the third person narration. But I would recommend this book to everyone I know. I simply loved it and I'm sure I will read it again in the future.
