Many people on Goodreads say that this book isn't as good as it could have been because the characters remain flat throughout the whole story. Well, that's true - Marlena might be the flattest character I read about in quite a while - but despite this fact, I loved Water for Elephants. I don't even know why exactly I liked this book - it's just the whole atmosphere that it creates. The circus people feel like family right away, Rosie might be the single most intelligent elephant ever and throughout reading this novel, I felt like working for a circus myself. I liked the whole setting, the storyline and Walter and Queenie. Gosh, I loved Walter and Queenie. I planned on watching the movie after finishing this book, but right now, it feels like I won't be able to see the movie for a couple of weeks just because it can't be as good as this novel has been.
After 230 pages or so I gave up reading Water for Elephants. Each time I thought about picking up the book and continue reading I got utterly frustrated, because the book is so boring and the storyline and writing didn't manage to draw me in at all. At first I thought "Hey, a story about a circus, sounds kind of interesting!" but it was actually painfully boring and I didn't come to care about any of the characters. I felt sorry for Jacob for a short time after his parents had died and he dropped out of school but he stopped thinking about them so quickly, I stopped caring about him. None of the other characters were interesting to me either. I would've liked to find out more about Marleena (?) and August's backstory but there was so little I stopped caring about that too. Sara Gruen managed to draw some vivid pictures with her writing but the writing didn't capture me at all. I don't even want to find out how it ends. And it also didn't help that I found out about the movie and knew who was playing Jacob and Marleena and therefore putting me off reading even more (since I don't like both actors).
I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. It took me a while to get into the story, but once I did I could barely put the book down. I loved the alternation between the past and the present. I liked present old Jacob and I felt sorry for him, being stuck in that “assisted living” place where he can’t even eat what he wants. Even though I was never interested in the circus I really enjoyed the story in all its details. Especially when Rosie came along. I immediately fell in love with her and I hated how she was being treated at the beginning. There were surely some things I did not see coming in the end. I liked the book even better when it stopped being about every day life at the circus and the love story (and other things) started to fully unfold. It's a fascinating story and I am so glad I let people convince me to read this book.
(to come... but woah.. it was great!)
Excellent! Just excellent! The story is so crazy and exciting, I was tearing apart all the time: from one hand, I wanted to read non stop to find out what was going to happen, but from the other hand, I was enjoying it so much, I wanted the story to be neverending. "Water for elephants" made me laugh, cry, worry and scream for joy countless times. One of the best books that I've read in my life! Strong recommendation for everyone, this book cannot leave anyone emotionless!
