Overall, the premise of this story and the diverse cast of characters definitely pulled me in and made me wanna continue with the series. It's great to have a poc main character in a fantasy world like this and I also enjoyed how brutal the story could get. This isn't a soft washed ya story where no one dies and the stakes aren't real. The stakes are very real and you could lose everything all throughout the story. I had some issues getting into the story and understanding Mariannes motivation for wanting revenge on her father. After her failed initiation into her fathers group of murderers, an initiation that reminded me a lot of Nevernight but without the stakes that one had, Marianne goes to an island and meets a family. This family quickly became her EVERYTHING and that just happened way too fast for me. I couldn't connect and when they died, which was obvious that they would, I didn't really care. So throughout the whole book, her motivation for revenging these random people she knew for like at most a couple weeks felt out of the blue to me. There were several moments of attempted sexual assault in this story and while I understand why they were there, I don't think they were necessary and I am quite done with sexual assault being used to show a character is bad. When the kind, her finances FATHER, wanted to marry her, I already knew he was a disgusting dirtbag, I didn't need him to force a kiss on her. Around the middle mark I was a little bored with the story. I had gotten into it before, but then I lost it again and couldn't really motivate myself to read a lot. It got better at around 70% though, especially when something I called in like the first chapter became true. When Torin first appeared and his angry body guard was described, I thought to myself: "Man, I wish this book had the guts to have them be actual lovers and the bodyguard is just very jealous and angry, they can't be together." Like 200 pages later, it turned out this fever dream is the truth. Torin and his bodyguard Sharpe are actually in love and this added a whole star to my rating. It's also the biggest reason I wean continue the series. In conclusion, I enjoyed that the stakes where high and the author wasn't afraid to kill of characters and have plot points that will actually change things. I was still often bored by the story, especially with how info dumpy it could get, but I still think this series has a lot of promise and I'm interested to see where it goes next.
Really didn't expect to like it this much, since I'm not a fan of pirate stories. Amazing story and characters. Can't wait for the next book!
