Delilah S. Dawsons ‚Bloom‘ hatte mich mit seiner düsteren Atmosphäre von der ersten Seite an. Dabei beginnt die Geschichte recht harmlos. Rosemary, genannt Ro, hat nach einer schmerzhaften Trennung neu begonnen. Neuer Ort, neuer Job, eine neue Wohnung. Und als sie auf einem Bauernmarkt Ash trifft, ist es um sie geschehen. Dawson schafft es alleine mit ihren Worten eine unglaublich beklemmende Stimmung zu kreiieren. Natürlich wusste ich anhand des Covers und des Klappentexts, dass es sich um eine Geschichte mit gothic vibes handelt. Doch Dawson beschreibt derart detailliert und intensiv von Geschmäckern und Gerüchen, dass diesen Beschreibungen immer etwas Lustvolles und Ruchloses anhängt. Dazu kommt, dass Ro und Ash sehr extrem in ihren Handlungen sind. Ro, die herausfinden musste, dass ihr Ex-Freund sie betrügt, ist auf der Suche nach Aufmerksamkeit. Diese findet sie durch Ash, selbst wenn sie anfangs noch viele Vergleiche zu Männern zieht und sehr eifersüchtig ist. Ros Vernarrtheit entwickelt sich zu einer kleinen Besessenheit, ihr Leben dreht sich irgendwann nur noch um Ash und wann sie sie wiedersehen wird. Diese wirkt auf den ersten Blick aber auch wie ein Volltreffer: Hübsch, selbstständig, im Leben stehend, die besten Cupcakes der Welt backend. Doch hier und da blitzen Verhaltensweisen auf, die Ro zwar stutzig machen, aber über die sie hinwegsehen kann.. Ich wusste irgendwann, was im Verborgenen liegt. Mich hat das Geheimnis also nicht kalt erwischt, aber es war trotzdem harter Tobak. Das Buch liefert keine Content Notes, deshalb würde ich die Geschichte nur den Leser*innen empfehlen, die mit allerlei menschlichen Abgründen umgehen können. Es sei gesagt, dass der Twist kein übernatürlicher ist. Die Story lohnt sich alleine schon wegen der unglaublich beklemmenden und bedrohlichen Grundstimmung, die der Bezeichnung ‚gothic‘ alle Ehre macht.
Das war echt gut
Ein kurzes Buch das sehr spannend wird. Den Schreibstil fand ich echt toll, von der Autorin möchte ich noch mehr lesen. Die Story hat sehr unschuldig angefangen und hat sich erstmal wie ein cozy Liebesroman angefühlt aber dann lernt man immer mehr von Ash kennen und es wird immer merkwürdiger. Das Ro überhaupt nicht die Gefahr erkannt hat, fand ich etwas komisch aber zum Ende hin äußert sie ja noch ein paar Gedanken dazu und das konnte ich dann schon nachvollziehen. Die Charaktere waren jedenfalls beide sehr gut geschrieben. Zwischendurch hab ich mich paar mal gefragt wo denn nun der Horror bleibt. Das Ende hat jedenfalls nicht enttäuscht. Und es ist nichts für schwache Nerven.
Romantisch und düster
Was sich hinter diesem Buch versteckt ist kein Geheimnis. Und dennoch hat es mich verschlungen. Zu verfolgen, wann die Stimmung bricht, wann der Bogen überspannt ist… ich habe diese kleine Spontanbegegnung in einem Sitz beendet.
I am not that much into creepy murder stories, but this one really had me captivated on every single page. Its a light read, despite its gore and suspense, which builds beautifully and subtle throughout the chapters. Its written in a poetic and naive way, making the stomach-wrenching finale hit you even harder. Gorgeous and gory, delightful 👌🏼
Took you long enough
Well that was something. I figured it out like 3 Chapters in or what? The writing was good, I liked the use of words and the way of describing scenery and characters but the storyline seemed to be building and building and building to a point where you thought there would be a big end but in the end all there was, was for-seen and predictable. Overall the book peeked my interest with it’s blurb but it did not live up to my expectations. It took me way too long for anything thrilling to happen and once Ro found out about Ash’s little something-something, the book already ended. Pretty disappointed in Ro for not even trying to put up a fight. It’s a good read but by the blurb I expected more of it. — SPOILER — The only thing that I did not for-see was the ending with Ro being dismantled. Well at least Anon wasn’t harmed. Seems like you’re not as good of an actor as you thought you were, Rosemary.
Short and bewitching at the Same time
The writing and descriptions of the settings were so well done that it drew me in on the first Page. Starting with a cozy setting at a Farmers Market with a newfound love blossoming and slowly reaveling one dark Secret after the other.
She is a selkie, and Ash has her skin.
Disgusting. I love it.
3.5 stars rounded down to 3 because it didn't felt right picking 4 stars i read Bloom yesterday in almost one go and i waited on rating and reviewing it till today. i still don't know what to say about this book the writing, the vibes and also a little of the plot remind me of T. Kingfishers work (and i absolutely LOVE her) so i really thought i must devour this book (pun is intended, actually). and i enjoyed reading Bloom not just as much as i wanted to. the first 3/4th of the book drag on and on and on and only the last 30 pages bring the gothic horror it promised. worst things in the book for me: Ash neglecting every single one of Ro's boundaries. Ro blindly falling for every (extremely obvious) lie Ash feeds her while saying her ex cheating made her wary (Spoiler: it does not). Ro saying everything Ash did would be a red flag in a man but it was ok that Ash did them because she was a pretty woman?! WHAT? everyone should go into this book absolutely blind SO DON'T READ THE BLURBS ON THE FIRST TWO PAGES, THERE'S A MAJOR SPOILER IN THERE
hated the characters and the obvious plot really hoped for a twist at the end, sadge
