Ich weiss gar nicht wo ich beginnen soll!
Die Story von «City of Stardust” hat mich sofort interessiert. Ich habe mir das Buch auf Englisch gekauft. Auch das Cover hat mich sofort angesprochen. Jedoch wurde ich vom Buch enttäuscht. Es ist das Debut Buch von Georgia Summers. Ihr Schreibstyl ist nicht wie ich ihn sonst gerne lese. Dies Sätze waren sehr lange und oft nicht aussagend. Es passierte viel in einem Satz und doch nichts. Auch die Storyline fand ich nur meh. Der Grundgedanke, dass Violet eine Familienfluch brechen will und dabei ihre verschollene Mutter wieder finden will, ist eine tolle Idee. Doch leider nicht umgesetzt. Es gab immer wieder Zeitsprünge von ein paar Tagen zwischen den Kapitel was ich unnötig und verwirrend fand. Da eigentlich ein Zeitdruck herrschte! Violet hat sich auf die Suche nach ihrer Mutter und der Lösung des Fluches gemacht. Jedoch hatte ich das Gefühl dabei war ich gar nicht dabei. Warum sie auf eine Party ging oder zu einer bestimmten Person war für mich oft unklar. Auch die magische Welt wurde für mich zu wenig beschrieben. Oft kam ich nicht genau nach was die Scholars können und warum. Ich könnte niemanden erklären, wie die Welt aussieht. Oder wie die Scholars ihre Ausbilden machen. Auch nicht, ob die Scholars eine Aufgabe haben. Zum Beispiel ihre Welt beschützen etc. Die beiden Hauptcharaktere Violet und Aleksander fand ich auch nicht besonders gut. Violet hatte für meinen Geschmack nicht genug stärke. Aleksander war sehr abhängig von Penelope und hat Violet immer wieder betrogen und angelogen. Violet schien dies jedoch nicht zu stören, denn sie verzieh ihm immer wieder und vertraute ihm auch. Die «Liebesgeschichte» zwischen den beiden war auch zu wenig spannend für mich. Ich fühlte keinen Funken zwischen den beiden. Es passierte zu wenig, um eine Bindung zu haben. Vielleicht lag es auch daran, dass allgemein die Charakter nicht wirklich vorgestellt werden oder nur wenig Backstory da war. Violet lernte man kurz als Kind kennen, aber ein Kapitel später war sie 10 Jahre älter und hatte andere Charakterzüge. Ich weiss eigentlich nichts über sie ausser dem Fluch. Penelope war für mich im Gegensatz ein sehr guter Charakter, über sie weiss ich mehr, obwohl es manchmal etwas verwirrend erzählt wurde. Ja und nun zum Ende. Leider hat es mich total enttäuscht. Der wahre Grund zum Fluch weiss ich immer noch nicht. Das Ende passierte ausserdem zu schnell für mich. Auch das Ende von Aleksander, Violet und ihrer Mutter war für mich unverständlich. Ich hätte gerne noch mehr gewusst. Ich denke das Buch hätte gut werden können, wenn es länger und ausführlicher geschrieben worden wäre. Auch mehr Charakterentwicklung und mehr Emotionen.
This standalone story is a true fairytale and is told like one. As a reader you feel like you are being pushed forward in someone else's dream, relentlessly. I have finished this book in two days because I could not stop listening. In the end though, I was still left with questions. They were the good kind of questions, not the ones where you think the author could have tied everything up better. No, the ones where you wonder what has happened and what might still be happening, and what the meaning is in all this.
This debut book has been compared to Addie LaRue and other stories, but to me it has way more Daughter of Smoke and Bone meets Neil Gaiman vibes. The audiobook narration puzzled me at first, because I had the feeling it was too matter-of-factly and with too little emotions. After a while though I realized it was completely fitting for the story, and added to this slightly detached fairytale vibe. I liked the characters, but they are not this book's strongest suit. Das hier sind nur die Hauptpunkte: Wer Erin Morgensterns "Das sternenlose Meer" gemocht hat, wird dieses Buch wahrscheinlich auch mögen. Es hat in vielen Punkten sehr viele Parallelen. Mich konnte es nicht abholen. Aber ich habe auch "Das sternenlose Meer" nicht sehr gemocht. Obwohl ich sagen muss dass dieses Buch mehr Plot hatte. Die Charaktere sind meh. Wirklich interessant war nur ein Charakter und das auch nur, weil er mich an Die Böse Königin aus der Serie "Once Upon A Time.." erinnert hat. Die mehr oder weniger romantische Beziehung zwischen Violet und Aleksander nicht nachvollziehbar. Der Schreibstil war oft zu ausgeschweift um flüssig lesbar zu sein. Die letzten ~50 Seiten waren quasi eine endlose Wiederholung von schon bekannten Gedanken und Ausschweifungen, die man auch hätte streichen oder zumindest Kürzen können. Der Stärkste Teil dieses Buches waren meiner Meinung nach die kurzen Interlude/Zwischenkapitel. Alles andere war..ok. There lies an old curse on the Everly family. Each generation the most powerful of them has to go with a mysterious woman, who doesn't seem to age, and is never seen again. The last Everly, Violet, with whom the bloodline ends, seeks to break the curse, because apparently, it would mean her death.
I haven't read such a great story in a while. It was so whimsical, beautiful and brutal all at once. I fell in love with the writing style first, then with Aleksander, with Violet's uncles and with the voice of the narrator (Kitty Parker). Somehow, I was at home in that story. Although they never stuck in one place for too long (this is a portal fantasy after all) the characters were all too familiar and I really didn't want to leave them behind. The ending, the willingness of sacrifice, caused all sorts of emotions - fear, racing heart, worry, ... - and I'm satisfied with how it turned out. There is a little bit of an open ending but the conflict of the book itself is resolved and all what's left to do for us is wonder. A wonderful standalone, first reading highlight of the year, cozy and terrifying at the same time, calming and emotional. Highly recommend! Magical, whimsical, darkly wondrous. Fairytale-esque unravelling, an enticing amount of darkness, beautiful writing, but un-rushed and complex. Missing the sparkle in their lovestory.
