3,5/5 ☆ ☆ "You have heard of me. Of course you have. They call me Lady Fortune - no matter how much I insist that it's just Fortune. " [...] "Do you know how many people have gotten away from me?" [...] "Zero." ☆ Also ich habe die Liebesgeschichte in diesem Buch geliebt. Ich meine hallo... the banter. Das war einfach unglaublich und ich liebe Orions Art. Auch die anderen Charaktere sind mir deutlich in diesem Buch ans Herz gewachsen. Rosalind ist wirklich deutlich sympathischer in diesem Buch. I love her. Jetzt muss man natürlich weiterlesen. Wegen dem Ende. Insgesamt also ein gutes Buch, mit einer sehr langsamen Entwicklung am Anfang, deswegen nur 3,5 Sterne
i cannot believe im saying this but i fear i love flf even more than tvd. ive grown so attached to the characters, also liked the plot even more than w tvd and ove and the characters own my heart (marshall is still babygirl). absolutely incredible. and Orion hitting a soldier with a crate and telling him to not touch his wife? we love a good husband, we really do.
Surprisingly good
I need the second installment! After the imperfect ending of „Our Violent Ends“ I was exiting for the new dilogy. You read from different points of view I loved all. The story of Rosalind was the most interesting for me, because she is a character with a hard past and a great development during „Foul Lady Fortune“. She is a brave, passionate and strong woman who found her independence as a spy. I like about her that she didn’t forget her past, especially her family, and look ahead as well. Rosalind learnt from her mistake and fights for her city Shanghai and the persons she loves. But I gladly read about the others main characters, too. Rosalind‘s sister Celia was already one of my favourite characters in the former dilogy and in this story she can be herself at last. In contrast to the Lang sisters or Alisa Montagov I didn’t know the Hong siblings before. Mostly we fellow Orion becoming Rosalind‘s alibi husband and my favourite Hong. He is real family guy who put his family always first. I admire his loyalty the most. But my favourite scenes were the shared between him and Rosalind. At the beginning they are only bickering (which was very funny) and with the time the newly weds build their trust as well as heal their old wounds together. They become a great and supporting team, although Rosalind and Orion learn each others‘ flaws, too. I liked them much more than her sister Celia and his brother Oliver together. The whole setting Shanghai 1931 was very intriguing and different from Shanghai 1926. There are more factions like Nationalists, Japanese and some more who fight for the rule over Shanghai and different spies everywhere. It was a exciting situation because you (and the characters) never know who you can trust and who is on which side. Concurrently I love historical settings where you learn something about the „real“ past. The story is a great mix of historical fiction, political schemes, mystery crime and some fantasy elements, because of that you never know what to expect. At first the book develops slowly, but constantly. Throughout the story you learn more and more about the characters, the world and the many secrets. We have a new mysterious person/monster which attacks at night with chemicals and all protagonists need to uncover. Chloe Gong wrote a complexity story where every little detail matters at the end. The isn’t any boring moment. On the contrary you get surprised regularly because of the many plot twists. I hope and fight along the characters during the whole book. Especially the last ten chapters are full of twists and surprises. I couldn’t stop reading and get shocked more than once. My heart gets even broken because the cliffhanger at the end is open and nasty. I cannot expect the second volume and my anticipation increased thanks to the last sentence. I have a guess and hope that I‘m right. CONCLUSION: 4/5⭐️ If you loved „These Violent Delights“, you will also love „Foul Lady Fortune“
Okay so at first, I wasn’t really into it. It took me some time to get into the story and to understand the whole situation, so the first 2/3 of the book were just me trying to understand the politics and questioning my brain.. so I was leaning towards 3 stars here. But the last third was amazing, I loved the plottwists and the writing in this part. At the beginning Chloe Gongs writing felt really distanced and impersonal, the pacing was too fast and with the whole historical background I couldn’t follow the story that good (maybe it’s my English tho hahha). I’m not into politics and especially not historical politics so I couldn’t really follow the storyline. I was confused until the end about the different sides and who on which side is. Something else that I disliked besides the pacing at first and the politics were the multiple povs... they came out of nowhere and Olivers and Orions names are just so similar that I was very much confused at the beginning. But as a reader of these violent delights, I was happy to see some of the characters again. BUT Rosalind and Orion as the main characters was the best thing in the entire world for me. I loved them so so much. If you know me, you know that fake dating and marriage of convenience is my favorite trope and well let’s just say that Chloe Gong did not disappoint. I loved their banter and their chemistry. Rosalind being grumpy and Orion being a sunshine is just the most enjoyable thing about the book. And as I already said, the last third really sucked me right in. I was obsessed. The whole plot was so good, all the plot twits… I was really in awe the whole time. If somebody could’ve seen my face while readind... they would’ve wanted to read this book too! So overall, I really enjoyed it. If you are into historicl fiction and politis, this one is for you! And if you are like me - not into these tings- this book is still for you. cause the romance is amazing and so are the plot twists. 4/5 stars for me :)
Speechless.
Miss Chloe Gong is going to get a bill for my therapy sessions. That is all.
Ich muss bis September warten?!?
