This author just really KNOWS how to write good smutty scenes! I really liked the setting in this novel and the little hints we got from the Alice in Wonderland inspiration. It was fun trying to find the little easter eggs and try to figure out who was supposed to represent whom. However, what was missing a bit for me was the connection to the characters. I did not really feel attached to any of them, which is why ultimately the cliffhanger at the end did not really impact me that much. I will read the next book in the duology asap though!

I think I’m in a reading slump. This was underwhelming. In theory a great book - mafia queen and her bodyguard. Sounds like a great idea and something new and exciting. But the reality was too many povs and whilst the concept of not giving us the fmcs pov till the 80% is intriguing - it caused me to not be that invested and rather loose interest. We follow Ezekiel who has to clean up some shit is little sister caused, with results in him becoming the queen of the local mafia family’s bodyguard - Onyx Embros. She’s a myth. Feared. And when he meets her, he’s intrigued and enchanted by her. This book is a peak example for amazing concept and lackluster execution. The pace is dragging, even though it’s only 290 pages. Nothing big happens and it’s just several chapters starting with „the next two weeks“, „the next few days“, „the following days“,… and we get a shitton of povs from different people in the inner circle of Onyx. Whilst this was interesting, it didn’t really help develop the story further. In the end I knew everyone better than the FMC herself. Was it intended? maybe. Still not a fan though because like I said, this made me struggle with maintaining investment in the story. Onyx is an exciting character and the concept of her being entirely different, than the usual mafia romance FMC was the reason I picked this book up. But so far I’m not really emotionally attached to her, nor any other character. To be fair I maybe would have enjoyed this more a different time reading it, when not on the verge of a reading slump. Overall a decent read, which had immense potential and was executed a bit poorly, but I’m still gonna start the second book. Lets see how it will go. 3
