"To enter the palace means to walk a path stained in blood, our medical teachers had whispered. There will be bloodshed. I only hope it will not be yours." I'm in awe. This book gave a well plotted mystery, a main character that desperately wants to be seen, difficult parental relationships and a tender slow burn romance. I haven't read a lot of historical fiction, but I felt transported to 1758 Joseon-era Korea. I admire Hyeons determination, strength and dedication to finish the task she has set for herself. Then there is Eojin strong, quite, calm and respectful towards everyone, but especially Hyeon. As the illegitimate daughter of a powerful man and a concubine, Hyeon worked hard to attain the highest postion achievable by a commoner, a palace nurse. She hopes that through her work she can one day earn the approval of her estranged father. After a massacre at the Hyeminseo - that Hyeon attended - leaves four women brutally murdered her mentor nurse Jeongsu is arrested for the crime. Hyeon knows that Jeongsu, a protector of life, is innocent and she launches her own investigation to save her mentor from the police force and their brutal interrogation methods and torture. When she meets the young police inspector Eojin they team up to uncover the truth. But there is also the rumor of the Crown Prince Jangheon beeing behind the murders and getting involved in palace politics is extremely dangerous.
