If you love Harry Potter and magic boarding schools - this is the right book for you! The Crowns of Croswald is the first book in the Croswald Series and a perfect introduction to a new world. The main character is Ivy Lovely, a 16 year old girl who works as a maid in the kitchen of a castle and never would have thought to be special. After an incident she and the scaldron Humboldt get kicked out. They cross the border that separates the mundane from the magical and Ivy suddenly has powers. She then gets to "The Halls of Ivy" - a boarding school for people like her. There they learn to control their magical blood and the power of their gems. She meets friends and gets sucked into an adventure, cause somehow she remembers someone she shouldn't know and noone else knows. I personally love books with magical school or camps. But I sadly couldn't connect with the Halls of Ivy, maybe because I had so many unanswered questions. Ivy is a great main character, she is brave and sweet. But I don't think that she acted her age. Ivy's emotions weren't conveyed, what I personally found to be missing. But I loved her roommate and best friend Rebecca. At first I thought that she would be snobbish and bragy but she was the complete opposite! Fun was great too but I have so many questions about him. He appeared a lot but they never talked about him. Another thing I loved was how mysterious everything was! The Dark Queen and the Selector were mentioned a lot but I know close to nothing about them! I loved the cover and the illustrations at the beginning of every chapter, they were gorgeous and magical. But there are a few things I disliked. Firstly, the plot was too slow! It took me more than 10 chapters to actually get into the storyline. But then, the last chapter was too fast! Too much happened in a short amount of time, which I found really confusing. In addition to that, the world building was really confusing for me too. I loved D.E Nights writing! She worked with detailed and awesome descriptions and created a magical feeling and image throughout the whole book. The book reminded me of Harry Potter and the school for good and evil. I highly recommend this to young fantasy readers. All in all, I gave "The Crowns of Croswald" 4 out of 5 stars. It was a fast read and really enjoyable.

Loved it. It felt like "Once upon a Time" meets "Harry Potter" meets "Alice in Wonderland"

At first, I had no idea what to expect from the story and everything was still a bit unclear. Some used were unfamiliar to me (not my native language), but fortunately I got used to that quickly. It's so much more imaginative than most fantasies these days, on a completely different level of fantasy. The story is lighter and more colorful for a reason or another. It reminds me very much of Harry Potter, but in an original way. It doesn't feel like a copy, it really has its own style. It also reminds me of A Winter's Promise, by the amount of fantasy and crazy events, but also a bit of the way it is written. After the prologue and the first two chapters, the story starts to catch on and reads away very nicely. The Characters Ivy is so much fun! In the beginning, she really has to crawl out of her shell: everything is new to her, because all of a sudden she can become a Scrivenist, when she was actually a maid who was expelled from the castle. Soon there appears to be more behind Ivy. It's also nice that Ivy doesn't immediately excel in everything, but is just normal, even a bit of a grey mouse, but not in an irritating way. Miraculous things happen around Ivy that cannot be explained. This really arouses curiosity: what is her history, where does she come from, what are her powers? Rebecca is introduced further on and is also such a nice character, a cozy and cheerful girl! It's nice that Ivy makes a good friend who is not inferior to the main character. She also is a very sweet character, but stands up for herself and it's nice how she supports Ivy at all times. Rebecca also has a special power that will come in handy later on! Another character is Fyn, a third-class boy who shows up everywhere Ivy goes. The further the story goes, the better friends they become. He could have had a little more depth in my opinion, but who knows that might come in part 2! Finally, there are the teachers who are written in nicely and further on in the story, I won't reveal anything yet, some mysterious characters pop up too. And there's a very annoying child in the book, haha, but of course that's part of it! The Vibes I looove the vibe of this book, the castle, how everything is written. It is so vivid and imaginative - you really invisionise everything and that works so well because the focus of a Scrivenist is also on sketching, memorising everything, art and magic. You really feel that throughout the whole book. Oh and the drawings at the beginning of each chapter are such a nice addition! I am really happy with this story. Everything is super magical and you imagine yourself in the world of magic potions, sumptuous decorations, beautiful rooms and piles of books. Who wouldn't want that? The Story The story is very nicely written. You get to know a little bit more everytime as Ivy discovers more about her past. I didn't think it was really a predictable book, it was actually full of surprises! You know that Ivy is probably special, that there is more going on, but I think the way this is all put together is very well done. I really enjoyed this story and I'm really looking forward to reading the next parts! Conclusion I really loved the book overal! It has so much fantasy in it, it was really a joy to my mind!
