A book full of love and hate, grief and relief
Die Geschichte berührt durch die tiefe Liebe zweier Menschen, die sich bis zum letzten Atemzug und darüber hinaus nacheinander sehnen. Trotz der Gier nach Ruhm und Ehre und des Teilens von körperlicher Nähe mit anderen Charakteren, scheint die Loyalität zwischen den beiden Protagonisten unantastbar. Jedoch wird im Verlauf des Buches schnell klar, dass es zu keinem Happy-End kommen mag. Es zeigt sich wie in klassischen Erzählungen, dass Hybris zum Fall führt. Ebenso ist in diesem Zusammenhang Vergebung ein leitendes Motiv des Gesamtwerkes und lässt den Leser mit einem Gefühl der Erlösung nach all den grausamen Ereignissen und Taten das Buch beenden. Dennoch einen Stern Abzug aufgrund der idealisierten Liebesgeschichte, die meines Erachtens die „Ecken und Kanten“ der zwei Protagonisten zu sehr in den Hintergrund treten ließen. Insbesondere Patroclus erscheint zu fehlerfrei.
Poetisch, tragisch und herzzerreißend schön
„The Song of Achilles“ ist ein emotionaler und wunderschön geschriebener Roman, der einen in die griechische Mythologie und in die Geschichte des trojanischen Krieges eintauchen lässt. Madeline Miller erzählt die Geschichte von Achilles und Patroclus auf eine berührende und tiefgründige Art und Weise, die einen in den Bann zieht.
Das Buch hat mich sehr berührt!!
Mich hat alles an diesem Buch abgeholt. Es war spannend, der Schreibstil war wunderschön und die Geschichte hatte viele Wendungen und blieb stets unterhaltsam. Von Anfang bis Ende leidet und liebt man mit den Charakteren und lernt sie in den verschiedenen tragischen und schönen Momenten zu verstehen. Ich werde dieses Buch definitiv nochmal lesen!
Schön & traurig. Eine Liebesgeschichte zwischen zwei jungen Männern in einem griechisch-mythologischen Setting.
Ich war wirklich sehr berührt von der Liebesgeschichte… kann ich nur empfehlen wenn man dramatische Liebe und Griechische Götter mag :D
Ich hatte Angst das ich es nicht mögen würde. Es hat mich aber komplett in seinen Bann gezogen! Die Geschichte um Patroclus und Achilles hat mir so viele Tränen gebracht…. Ich liebe die beiden und die Tragik dahinter. Jeder noch so kleine Satz/ Gedanke von Patroclus hat mich berührt und die Liebe die sie für einander empfunden haben …. Wenn ihr interessiert seid an den beiden reicht das glaube ich nicht ganz aus. Es ist mehr als nur eine Liebesgeschichte! Es ist auch die Geschichte des Ruhms und des Kriegs der zu der Zeit war. Ich hab’s komplett geliebt !!

Ich sitze nachts um halb 3 heulend im Bett.
First things first: ich kenne die Geschichte und die verschiedenen mythologischen Figuren auswendig. Ist mein Job, inklusive deren unterschiedlichen Darstellungen im Laufe der Jahrtausende. Sei es literarisch als auch bildlich. Und ich weiß, dass sich ihr deutliche Freiheiten genommen wurde, v.a. bzgl. Achilles. Homers Ilias portraitiert ihn komplett anders, aber: I don't care! Ich habe das Buch in einem Stück gelesen und saß am Ende heulend über dem Buch. Ich wusste natürlich von Seite 1 an, was passieren wird und wie das ausgeht, und dennoch hat mich die Liebegeschichte um Achilles und Patroclus so dermaßen berührt. Es ist einfach diese Kombination aus "i'll love you until the end of times" und das Wissen um das unausweichliche Schicksal, dass diese Geschichte so tragisch macht.
Ich weiß wirklich nicht, wie ich dieses Buch Kommentieren soll, außer: ich fand das Buch gut. Mir hat das Worldbuilding gut gefallen, die Neben-Charaktere waren spannend und besitzen tiefe. Die zwei Hauptcharaktere fand ich einfach nur wunderbar und deren Beziehung und Liebe zu einander hat sich über die Seiten hinweg sorgsam und glaubhaft entwickelt. Bis auf ein Event, fand ich eine jede Handlung oder Entscheidung innerhalb des Settings absolut nachvollziehbar! Und, Ja man weiß wie die Story endet, aber trotzdem habe ich am Ende geweint. Ich glaube kein Buch bisher hat mich emotional so tief berührt wie Patroklos auf den letzten Seiten. Ich war mir am Anfang unschlüssig über den Schreibstil, aber die Sorge war absolut unbegründet und ich habe das Buch innerhalb von nur wenigen Abenden ausgelesen. Sobald ich das nächste Mal Bücher kaufe, wird Circe definitiv ins Einkaufkörbchen fallen!

Spoiler ________________________________________ I cried so much in the last 50 pages I couldn't keep reading, especially after Patroclus' death, it's so incredibly sad and beautifully written as you could just see from his point of view, knowing what he thought about what Achilles was doing. I could only read two sentences at a time because I was in tears again. Achilles went mad because one half of him was torn away, and the only thing left was a weapon of war. Patroclus was the good thing in his life, the thing that made him human, the thing that made him play his lyre and sing Patroclus preferred that to fame Patroclus was his song, and the book is called "The Song of Achilles" because at the end Patroclus tells Thetis the story of Achilles and then goes over to him I love this book so much. It is the best book I have ever read in my life and I want everyone to read it too. It is so beautiful
Right in the feels
wow. Ich bin gerade ein bisschen in so ner Mythologie Phase. Ich kenne mich nicht groß´damit aus, lese es aber gerne und ich fand es cool manche Namen wiederzuerkennen nachdem sie mir in der Göttlich Reihe begegnet sind. Aber nun zum buch. Mir hat es wirklich gut gefallen. Die ganze Kindheit der beiden, wie sie zusammen aufgewachsen sind und der ganze Part mit Chiron war echt cool. Das einzige was mich etwas gestört hat war dass die Ferse nicht die Todesursache war (dafür sein Herz..) und die unnötige Sexszene von Patroclus und Achilles Frau. Die hat null zum Plott beigetragen ... Mir hat Achilels Mutter gut gefallen und die ganze Schlacht war echt spannend. Das ende hat mich emotional zerstört Diese tiefe Liebe über den Tod hinaus...fav trope 10/10 would recommend

I loved this book so much. The writing is amazing and very understandable for someone whose first language isn’t english. I think you need to know something about greek mythology, achilles and patroclus before you read that book. It’s great for someone who loves greek mythology.

Achilles, das war doch der Typ mit der Achilles-Ferse. Über ebendiesen Typen hat Madeline Miller, die Autorin von 'Circe', einen Roman geschrieben - erzählt aus der Sicht seines Liebhabers und Gefährten, Patroklos. Dabei begleitet Patroklos Achilles bei allen Stationen seines Lebens: bei der jahrelangen Ausbildung durch den Zentauren Cheiron, in sein Versteck auf Skyros, und schließlich in den 10 Jahre anhaltenden Krieg um Troja. Die Lesenden sind somit von Beginn der Liebesgeschichte dabei, die erst zaghaft, dann stürmisch und schließlich vertrauensvoll und unverzichtbar wird. Während Achilles seiner Bestimmung folgt, ein unvergessener Held zu werden, ist Patroklos lange Zeit für Außenstehende nicht mehr als ein farbloser Schatten - bis es zum Showdown kommt. Dafür, dass Patroklos in Homers Ilias tatsächlich nur eine winzige Nebenrolle spielt, hat Madeline Miller ihm eine liebevolle Tiefe gegeben. Mehr als Achilles, der doch eher eindimensional blieb. Mir hat das Buch als Hörbuch sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Die Kampfszenen waren mir persönlich etwas zu lang, aber ich liebe Millers Schreibstil und ich liebe, was sie aus griechischer Mythologie macht. Beautifully Tragic
I have to start by saying that I've always been interested in Greek mythology and Greek legends, so this book was a must. 😌 I love the writing style of the author. It's calming but detailed, and it pulls you right into the beautiful scenery. 🌼 I love how the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus evolves as they grow up together. I liked how the story builds up and leads to a tragic downfall, as most Greek epics do. I do enjoy how we read this story from the POV of Patroclus. Through his eyes, we see the beauty, the vulnerability, the immortal side, and the mortal side of Achilles. Achilles, who is more than just a demigod meant for greatness, more than just the son of a king and a goddess. Achilles who is also an affectionate Lover, a caring general , and once a carefree boy. Achilles may be perfect in his movements and looks. However, his pride is his biggest flaw. Pride that makes him almost selfish at one point, which makes him very human. In other words, the Song of Achilles is beautifully tragic..simply impactful.
Good, but Achilles really got on my nerves at some point (obviously... he's Achilles). But I loved the prose! Looking forward to read other books of Madeline Miller!

Perfektion. Ganz schlicht und einfach Perfektion. Mir fehlen die Worte, also versuch ichs erst gar nicht. Nur eine Warnung vorweg: Ich habe nich nie so schlimm wegen eines Buches geweint. Ich glaube ich bin nachhaltig traumatisiert. Aber ich würde es jederzeit wieder tun.
I liked the relationship of Patroclus and Achilles at the beginning very much and enjoyed them growing up together. But that feeling turned for me when they got to Troy and Achilles started to behave cruelly and out of his character. Especially in the end with Briseis and his decision to let Agamemnon take her away. I think the book is an interesting retell and the author definitely took creative liberty in order to do so. But in some way it hurt the story more than it did her good, especially when it comes to Patroclus. In the Illéas he is described as a skilled fighter, not as good as Achilles (because he is a half god duh), but he could hold his own on the battlefield. I didn't like that Patroclus was so dependent on Achilles when it came to the battlefield and I wished that they would have stuck more to the original. All in all I would say it is a solid book and especially in the beginning a very sweet romance.
Wer ein Fan der griechischen Mythologie ist. Mit einem Touch Romanze - der wird hier auf seinr Kosten kommen.
Philtatos. Most beloved. This book is my absolute favourite, if i could give it more stars i would. I didn‘t get a quote tattooed just because. This book is a literal masterpiece.
I‘ve read and recommended this book so many times, i‘ve loaned my copy to friends so often, that the pages are falling out. This book is captivating like no other and it shatters you like nothing ever will. I get giddy any time a name is mentioned or a place, a story i know, it feels like a lesson in Greek mythology intertwined in a beautifully tragic love story. You get to see Patroclus and Achilles grow up together and you grow up with them, you mature with them from the romanticised and idilic rose cave on Pelion to the bloody and savage battle field in Troy. Madeleine Miller has a way with words that paints a world so vivid and colourful, it‘s hard not to forget that you‘re sitting in your bed, on the bus, whereever. The way she foreshadows so cleverly and yet so painfully and beautifully at the same time, the way the "big" and famous quotes are all weaved into the scenes like they‘re not at all big and grand but just the truth, not the big love confessions we are used to. The fact that Patroclus and Achilles never once say "I love you" and yet their love feels deeper and purer and more powerful than any love I have ever read about or seen on TV. This book holds a very special place in my heart and if it wouldn‘t end with me sobbing for the last 70 pages and having a break down once i finish, i would re-read it instantly. I highly recommend The Song of Achilles to anyone who hasn‘t read it and wants to be sucked into the beautiful world of Ancient Greece Madeleine Miller has created.

Wow, I ... I'm kinda speechless. This book is so well written, you can feel the friendship and love bloom. Over the last ⅓ of the book everything happens really fast and I didn't know if I wanted to cry or to scream. Maybe I did both. Especially the last line, made me cry for minutes.

Die meisten, die dieses Buch lesen, werden die Geschichte von Achilles bereits kennen. Man glaubt zu wissen, was auf einen zukommt und dennoch überrollt einen dieses Buch mit jedem weiteren Kapitel, raubt einem den Atem und bringt Tränen, bringt Hass, aber vor allem Liebe und Hoffnung. Dieses Buch ist nicht umsonst so beliebt und hat Preise gewonnen. Und es hält, was es verspricht: Die Autorin füllt jeden Satz mit Gefühl, spart an keinen Details, weder im Guten noch im Schlechten, ohne dass es zuviel oder lächerlich wirkt, und reißt einen mit in eine Geschichte, die wundervoller und tragischer nicht sein könnte. Ich wünschte, ich könnte es noch einmal lesen, mit unwissenden Augen, nur um alles noch einmal zu erleben und Achilles und Patroclus auf ihrem Weg zu begleiten.

Okay, after just bawling my eyes out for half an hour I still don't know how to describe this book. Madeline Miller has such an amazing way with words. I teared up at basically everything because I felt with those characters so much. Admittedly I knew nothing about the Greek mythology but the few things I learned 8 years ago in school. (I purposely decided not to read the Iliad or Odyssey before this because I knew this was an emotional book and I wanted to have the full experience of grief). I got it. I kinda hate myself for it

I don’t even know how to put it into words what I’m feeling right now. This book is truly a masterpiece. From the beginning till the end, I loved every single second of it. The relationship of Patroclus and Achilles is so pure and beautiful written. Overall Millers writing style is full of poetic elements which make it even realer and deeper. The characters were so well formed that you could really identify yourself with them and their actions. Especially Patroclus felt really relatable to me since I am also a pretty honest and loyal person who tends to be a people pleaser. The end literally broke me, wrecked me, ripped my heart out, twisted it and put it back in again, even tho the last page made me smile again. I still couldn’t stop crying. Their connection is everything. “He’s half of my soul, as the poets say”. It truly was a rollercoaster of emotions which really made it to the top of my favorite books. “I could recognize him in by touch alone, by smell, I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world….”

why is it so hyped?
this took me annoyingly long to read. i really wanted to like this book since so many people recommended it to me saying how sad and deep it was. i didn't like it. i feel like neither Patroclus nor Achilles have a noticeable interesting personality. patroclus seems like a little weak insecure twink. achilles is written as the most perfect, handsome, strong, flawless character which makes him about as boring as Patroclus their relationship is so bland and feels like a fan fiction written by a 12 year old girl fetishizing gay men. why is this book so hyped? it's still beautifully written and the ending is quite pretty, that's why i give 2,5 stars.

Ich mochte die Symbolik, für die Patroclos stand, aber der Schreibstil war nicht meins. Bei Circe hat der / die Übersetzer*in ganze Arbeit geleistet, denn das gefiel mir so viel besser

Der Schreibstil hat mir gut gefallen, aber während es viele andere anscheinend zu Tränen gerührt hat, ist das bei mir ausgeblieben. SPOILER: Ich verstehe nicht ganz, wieso so viele bei der Romanze mitfiebern. Ab einem gewissen Punkt konnte ich beide Charaktere nicht mehr ausstehen. Ich habe Rezensionen gelesen, die besagen: genau das ist der Punkt - es spielt im Krieg, es gibt keine guten. Das Argument kann ich noch eher nachvollziehen.. Aber Patroclus hatte gefühlt keine andere Persönlichkeit als Achilles anzuhimmeln 🥲 Ich kann den Hype leider einfach nicht so ganz nachvollziehen
Herzzerreißend
Ja, ich habe geweint. Mehr als bei jedem anderen Buch bisher. Auch wenn es in der Mitte vielleicht einen kleinen Durchhänger hat, dieses Buch ist wunderbar poetisch und herzzerreißend emotional geschrieben. Mit den vielleicht schönsten Zitaten, die ich bisher lesen durfte (in englisch). Mittlerweile bin ich wieder zwei Bücher weiter, aber die Geschichte um Patroclus und Achilles lässt mich einfach nicht los.

I enjoyed the book but unfortunately I couldn't quite understand the hype around it. After some initial difficulties, the story did captivate me and I wanted to keep reading but I felt that the plot progressed very slowly. I would have liked to read more about the development of the two boys from age 13 to adulthood at 28. Nevertheless, I kept hoping that Achilles would prioritize his love for Patroclus over his honor and that the story would have a happy ending. Although it turned out differently, I was not disappointed. Overall, a great book, but in my opinion it doesn't quite measure up to other books that have been hyped on BookTok.

Patroclus was the good thing in his life, the thing that made him human, the thing that made him play his lyre and sing Patroclus preferred that to fame Patroclus was his song, and the book is called "The Song of Achilles" because at the end Patroclus tells Thetis the story of Achilles and then goes over to him I love this book so much. It is the best book I have ever read in my life and I want everyone to read it too. It is so beautiful
Right in the feels
wow. Ich bin gerade ein bisschen in so ner Mythologie Phase. Ich kenne mich nicht groß´damit aus, lese es aber gerne und ich fand es cool manche Namen wiederzuerkennen nachdem sie mir in der Göttlich Reihe begegnet sind. Aber nun zum buch. Mir hat es wirklich gut gefallen. Die ganze Kindheit der beiden, wie sie zusammen aufgewachsen sind und der ganze Part mit Chiron war echt cool. Das einzige was mich etwas gestört hat war dass die Ferse nicht die Todesursache war (dafür sein Herz..) und die unnötige Sexszene von Patroclus und Achilles Frau. Die hat null zum Plott beigetragen ... Mir hat Achilels Mutter gut gefallen und die ganze Schlacht war echt spannend. Das ende hat mich emotional zerstört Diese tiefe Liebe über den Tod hinaus...fav trope 10/10 would recommend

I loved this book so much. The writing is amazing and very understandable for someone whose first language isn’t english. I think you need to know something about greek mythology, achilles and patroclus before you read that book. It’s great for someone who loves greek mythology.

Achilles, das war doch der Typ mit der Achilles-Ferse. Über ebendiesen Typen hat Madeline Miller, die Autorin von 'Circe', einen Roman geschrieben - erzählt aus der Sicht seines Liebhabers und Gefährten, Patroklos. Dabei begleitet Patroklos Achilles bei allen Stationen seines Lebens: bei der jahrelangen Ausbildung durch den Zentauren Cheiron, in sein Versteck auf Skyros, und schließlich in den 10 Jahre anhaltenden Krieg um Troja. Die Lesenden sind somit von Beginn der Liebesgeschichte dabei, die erst zaghaft, dann stürmisch und schließlich vertrauensvoll und unverzichtbar wird. Während Achilles seiner Bestimmung folgt, ein unvergessener Held zu werden, ist Patroklos lange Zeit für Außenstehende nicht mehr als ein farbloser Schatten - bis es zum Showdown kommt. Dafür, dass Patroklos in Homers Ilias tatsächlich nur eine winzige Nebenrolle spielt, hat Madeline Miller ihm eine liebevolle Tiefe gegeben. Mehr als Achilles, der doch eher eindimensional blieb. Mir hat das Buch als Hörbuch sehr viel Spaß gemacht. Die Kampfszenen waren mir persönlich etwas zu lang, aber ich liebe Millers Schreibstil und ich liebe, was sie aus griechischer Mythologie macht. Beautifully Tragic
I have to start by saying that I've always been interested in Greek mythology and Greek legends, so this book was a must. 😌 I love the writing style of the author. It's calming but detailed, and it pulls you right into the beautiful scenery. 🌼 I love how the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus evolves as they grow up together. I liked how the story builds up and leads to a tragic downfall, as most Greek epics do. I do enjoy how we read this story from the POV of Patroclus. Through his eyes, we see the beauty, the vulnerability, the immortal side, and the mortal side of Achilles. Achilles, who is more than just a demigod meant for greatness, more than just the son of a king and a goddess. Achilles who is also an affectionate Lover, a caring general , and once a carefree boy. Achilles may be perfect in his movements and looks. However, his pride is his biggest flaw. Pride that makes him almost selfish at one point, which makes him very human. In other words, the Song of Achilles is beautifully tragic..simply impactful.
Good, but Achilles really got on my nerves at some point (obviously... he's Achilles). But I loved the prose! Looking forward to read other books of Madeline Miller!

Perfektion. Ganz schlicht und einfach Perfektion. Mir fehlen die Worte, also versuch ichs erst gar nicht. Nur eine Warnung vorweg: Ich habe nich nie so schlimm wegen eines Buches geweint. Ich glaube ich bin nachhaltig traumatisiert. Aber ich würde es jederzeit wieder tun.
I liked the relationship of Patroclus and Achilles at the beginning very much and enjoyed them growing up together. But that feeling turned for me when they got to Troy and Achilles started to behave cruelly and out of his character. Especially in the end with Briseis and his decision to let Agamemnon take her away. I think the book is an interesting retell and the author definitely took creative liberty in order to do so. But in some way it hurt the story more than it did her good, especially when it comes to Patroclus. In the Illéas he is described as a skilled fighter, not as good as Achilles (because he is a half god duh), but he could hold his own on the battlefield. I didn't like that Patroclus was so dependent on Achilles when it came to the battlefield and I wished that they would have stuck more to the original. All in all I would say it is a solid book and especially in the beginning a very sweet romance.

I‘ve read and recommended this book so many times, i‘ve loaned my copy to friends so often, that the pages are falling out. This book is captivating like no other and it shatters you like nothing ever will. I get giddy any time a name is mentioned or a place, a story i know, it feels like a lesson in Greek mythology intertwined in a beautifully tragic love story. You get to see Patroclus and Achilles grow up together and you grow up with them, you mature with them from the romanticised and idilic rose cave on Pelion to the bloody and savage battle field in Troy. Madeleine Miller has a way with words that paints a world so vivid and colourful, it‘s hard not to forget that you‘re sitting in your bed, on the bus, whereever. The way she foreshadows so cleverly and yet so painfully and beautifully at the same time, the way the "big" and famous quotes are all weaved into the scenes like they‘re not at all big and grand but just the truth, not the big love confessions we are used to. The fact that Patroclus and Achilles never once say "I love you" and yet their love feels deeper and purer and more powerful than any love I have ever read about or seen on TV. This book holds a very special place in my heart and if it wouldn‘t end with me sobbing for the last 70 pages and having a break down once i finish, i would re-read it instantly. I highly recommend The Song of Achilles to anyone who hasn‘t read it and wants to be sucked into the beautiful world of Ancient Greece Madeleine Miller has created.

Wow, I ... I'm kinda speechless. This book is so well written, you can feel the friendship and love bloom. Over the last ⅓ of the book everything happens really fast and I didn't know if I wanted to cry or to scream. Maybe I did both. Especially the last line, made me cry for minutes.

Die meisten, die dieses Buch lesen, werden die Geschichte von Achilles bereits kennen. Man glaubt zu wissen, was auf einen zukommt und dennoch überrollt einen dieses Buch mit jedem weiteren Kapitel, raubt einem den Atem und bringt Tränen, bringt Hass, aber vor allem Liebe und Hoffnung. Dieses Buch ist nicht umsonst so beliebt und hat Preise gewonnen. Und es hält, was es verspricht: Die Autorin füllt jeden Satz mit Gefühl, spart an keinen Details, weder im Guten noch im Schlechten, ohne dass es zuviel oder lächerlich wirkt, und reißt einen mit in eine Geschichte, die wundervoller und tragischer nicht sein könnte. Ich wünschte, ich könnte es noch einmal lesen, mit unwissenden Augen, nur um alles noch einmal zu erleben und Achilles und Patroclus auf ihrem Weg zu begleiten.

Okay, after just bawling my eyes out for half an hour I still don't know how to describe this book. Madeline Miller has such an amazing way with words. I teared up at basically everything because I felt with those characters so much. Admittedly I knew nothing about the Greek mythology but the few things I learned 8 years ago in school. (I purposely decided not to read the Iliad or Odyssey before this because I knew this was an emotional book and I wanted to have the full experience of grief). I got it. I kinda hate myself for it

I don’t even know how to put it into words what I’m feeling right now. This book is truly a masterpiece. From the beginning till the end, I loved every single second of it. The relationship of Patroclus and Achilles is so pure and beautiful written. Overall Millers writing style is full of poetic elements which make it even realer and deeper. The characters were so well formed that you could really identify yourself with them and their actions. Especially Patroclus felt really relatable to me since I am also a pretty honest and loyal person who tends to be a people pleaser. The end literally broke me, wrecked me, ripped my heart out, twisted it and put it back in again, even tho the last page made me smile again. I still couldn’t stop crying. Their connection is everything. “He’s half of my soul, as the poets say”. It truly was a rollercoaster of emotions which really made it to the top of my favorite books. “I could recognize him in by touch alone, by smell, I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world….”

why is it so hyped?
this took me annoyingly long to read. i really wanted to like this book since so many people recommended it to me saying how sad and deep it was. i didn't like it. i feel like neither Patroclus nor Achilles have a noticeable interesting personality. patroclus seems like a little weak insecure twink. achilles is written as the most perfect, handsome, strong, flawless character which makes him about as boring as Patroclus their relationship is so bland and feels like a fan fiction written by a 12 year old girl fetishizing gay men. why is this book so hyped? it's still beautifully written and the ending is quite pretty, that's why i give 2,5 stars.

Ich mochte die Symbolik, für die Patroclos stand, aber der Schreibstil war nicht meins. Bei Circe hat der / die Übersetzer*in ganze Arbeit geleistet, denn das gefiel mir so viel besser

Der Schreibstil hat mir gut gefallen, aber während es viele andere anscheinend zu Tränen gerührt hat, ist das bei mir ausgeblieben. SPOILER: Ich verstehe nicht ganz, wieso so viele bei der Romanze mitfiebern. Ab einem gewissen Punkt konnte ich beide Charaktere nicht mehr ausstehen. Ich habe Rezensionen gelesen, die besagen: genau das ist der Punkt - es spielt im Krieg, es gibt keine guten. Das Argument kann ich noch eher nachvollziehen.. Aber Patroclus hatte gefühlt keine andere Persönlichkeit als Achilles anzuhimmeln 🥲 Ich kann den Hype leider einfach nicht so ganz nachvollziehen
Herzzerreißend
Ja, ich habe geweint. Mehr als bei jedem anderen Buch bisher. Auch wenn es in der Mitte vielleicht einen kleinen Durchhänger hat, dieses Buch ist wunderbar poetisch und herzzerreißend emotional geschrieben. Mit den vielleicht schönsten Zitaten, die ich bisher lesen durfte (in englisch). Mittlerweile bin ich wieder zwei Bücher weiter, aber die Geschichte um Patroclus und Achilles lässt mich einfach nicht los.

I enjoyed the book but unfortunately I couldn't quite understand the hype around it. After some initial difficulties, the story did captivate me and I wanted to keep reading but I felt that the plot progressed very slowly. I would have liked to read more about the development of the two boys from age 13 to adulthood at 28. Nevertheless, I kept hoping that Achilles would prioritize his love for Patroclus over his honor and that the story would have a happy ending. Although it turned out differently, I was not disappointed. Overall, a great book, but in my opinion it doesn't quite measure up to other books that have been hyped on BookTok.
