Beschreibung

A book about growing up which has delighted generations of young readers. The illustrations by Ella Bailey are perfect for the modern audience. This edition includes extra material for young readers.

The four March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – live in financial hardship in New England with their mother, while their father has been drafted to fight in the Civil War. The girls embark on a series of adventures and endure a number of unexpected misfortunes – experiences that allow their personalities to emerge: Meg sensible and outgoing, Jo literary and boyish, Beth musical and shy, and Amy artistic and selfish – but the bonds holding together the March family remain unbroken.

Initially written as a novel for girls, Little Women is now regarded as an all-time American classic for all readers, inspiring generations of women writers and giving rise to many adaptations.

The book was great and I really like the story behind it but for me as a none native speaker it was kinda hard to understand and it took its time to read it. I fell in love with Jo from the first page on and she is my favourite even tho Laurie comes quite close to her.

Ich liebe die Filme (1994 und 2019), aber das Buch hat mir gar nicht gefallen. So kitschig. So moralisch. Mehr ein Kinderbuch. Ja, ich weiss, es ist ein Klassiker, aber ich hätte es fast abgebrochen.

I’ve read 85% of this book within three days, that‘s how much the story sucked me in. Also, I want to see the 2019 movie, so I decided to read the book first. I‘ve never heard of the plot before, so I really didn‘t have an idea of what might happen. I enjoyed all four little women: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy were each their own yet equally to like. From time to time each got their focus and/or chapter and make their family sound very likable, although, as stated, they are poor and don‘t have many resources go back up on. They made the best of the situation with a father that was at war and a mother who had to work on her own, yet watched over them, guided and adviced the girls. „Little Women“ is set within a year and therefore has time jumps that don’t confuse and make sense. The author introduces new characters such as the Laurences and pushed events in that tested the girls and made them learn of it. As of, character development happened! Since there weren‘t too many characters and each event got its time to be told, I had the feeling that I got a well set and rounded story with character I liked and understood. I had an enjoyable time reading it and felt like it was a good idea to read „Little Women“ during Christmas.
