The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. But Jamie is no ordinary child. Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn.
Its so rare to have a malicious character happen to be queer instead of being malicious BECAUSE they are queer and credit where credit is due Stephen King did this Very Well. Ive always enjoyed non linear storytelling (I also enjoy when a medium using non linear storytelling shouts out another work using non linear storytelling - hello saw reference!! made me very happy ty mr king) and I enjoyed Jamies narration through his lives most harrowing experiences quite a lot. He’s an incredibly sympathetic and believable character. Which is another credit to Stephen King, considering he hasn’t been a child/teenager in a while and he managed to make me (someone who is exactly Jamies age and was a kid in the early 2000s like him) believe wholeheartedly that this a peers story I’m being told. All the little (and big) nudges and references to “It” especially were exciting to me personally. Since that particular bit of King legacy introduced me into horror as a genre and i pretty much don’t function normally anymore whenever Maine, Sewers, Clowns or in this case Deadlights are brought up. All in all i had a pretty good time with this and would read more about Jamies run ins with the dead.
Definitely one of his weaker works. Still better than The Institute.
Wtf did I just read.... thats defently a no for me. this was a two maybe two and a half stars book for me till the last chapter. Complety unnesssecary ending of the story. This was not for me.
4.5 stars
Sadly, not my thing. Even though the book is rather short it did not manage to keep my attention. Also something I don't see a lot of people mention: there are some fatphobic scenes with extremely triggering and explicit fatphobic language used, so definitely a trigger warning for that! Additionally, the big reveal of Jamie's father being his uncle, thus including an incest plotline just for the shock factor was unnecessary and bothered me too much. It added nothing to the story which is why I am guessing it was there for the sole purpose of shocking the reader. This, and the Harry Potter reference in there really just gave me the rest. I have had it.
You can always rely on Stephen King, this man never disappoints. I hope, he has a long life ahead of him and keeps dropping such extraordinary gems as „Later“. This piece of art was definitely not as scary as some of his books, but nevertheless I really enjoyed being a part of the ups and downs of Jamie Conklin‘s ghostly-life.
