while i did enjoy it, this was a difficult book. it's a novel told from a number of different perspectives: there are many characters that provide their points of view, sometimes in first-person, sometimes in third-person, while also shifting from past to present. all those people's lives are connected, their stories interwoven, until, in the end, they all (kind of!) collide. due to the many characters and perspectives, i found this book hard to get into. at some point i'd get interested in a specific character but by then, their chapter would be almost over, and i'd have to get to know another new person. lots of subjects were introduced and keeping track wasn't easy. not everyone was likeable and not every voice was compelling, although some definitely were. it didn't necessarily confuse me, though - it was just hard to connect to. however, i learned so much about urban native american communities and because of that, i'm glad i read it. it's a book that we need to learn about people who are being ignored by media a lot of the time. there there offers the chance to get to know lots of different characters that show just how diverse this group of people is and which struggles they go through! the ending though. i don't know. it left a lot of problems unsolved and i honestly found it pretty unsatisfying. in general, i liked reading this book though! it's been compared to homegoing and i totally get why, but comparing the two, homegoing just did more for me from an emotional point of view.
