Description

Heartstopper meets Crazy Rich Asians in this heartfelt, joyful paperback original rom-com that follows an aspiring chef who discovers the recipe for love is more complicated than it seems when he starts fake-dating a handsome new customer.

Dylan Tang wants to win a Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake-making competition for teen chefs—in memory of his mom, and to bring much-needed publicity to his aunt’s struggling Chinese takeout in Brooklyn.

Enter Theo Somers: charming, wealthy, with a smile that makes Dylan’s stomach do backflips. AKA a distraction. Their worlds are sun-and-moon apart, but Theo keeps showing up. He even convinces Dylan to be his fake date at a family wedding in the Hamptons.

In Theo’s glittering world of pomp, privilege, and crazy rich drama, their romance is supposed to be just pretend . . . but Dylan finds himself falling for Theo. For real. Then Theo’s relatives reveal their true colors—but with the mooncake contest looming, Dylan can’t risk being sidetracked by rich-people problems.

Can Dylan save his family’s business and follow his heart—or will he fail to do both?

Yôu yuán qiān lî lái xiāng huì ~ We have the destiny to meet across a thousand Miles 🤍✨

Fake Dates and Mooncakes | Sher Lee | Queere Rom-Com | Pan Macmillan | 4,5⭐️ „Fake Dates and Mooncakes“ war in erster Linie ein absoluter Coverkauf.

This book is a really cute and easy-to get through read without any doubt. I enjoyed the writing style of the author, as even though it’s a young adult book the writing style still felt more elevated and not as simple as in other YA books. In terms of the setting, I have to say that this is the first book I‘ve read in a restaurant setting and one of my first books where you can you find a lot of asian mcs and side characters. I really enjoyed reading a book and learning new things about these settings and cultures. I mean, I can‘t speak on the accuracy of these representations, but it seems to be at least part own-voice (author is from Singapore) and I haven‘t gathered anything bad from the other reviews that I read. However, I had a bit of troubles with the pacing and the characters in this story. I feel like every issue was solved super fast, as the book was pretty short. This was mostly my issue within the main couple but also within their families. Whenever Dylan or Dylan’s family had some kind of troubles Theo ran immediately to fix them for them. I mean, yes the plot had to run fast and it was also explained that Theos family comes from a lot of money, but for me it felt like there were no real emotional consequences in Dylan’s (families) issues, as they were (nearly) all fixed pretty quickly. Regarding Theos character I have to say, that he also had not many issues and no flaws at all. He was just there, made no mistakes at all and was the picture perfect boyfriend for Dylan and nearly everyone else also loved him. I just wish that the one issue that he had in this book would have had some more impact on him and his character developement, because now the storyline with this issue honestly felt a bit flat for me. All in all, I would still recommend this book if you are looking for a cute and corny love story, which makes you just feel warm and cozy inside while reading it

- 5 stars ✰ "We have the destiny to meet across a thousand miles. I'm glad we found our way to each other." This was everything I could have possibly asked for and more. "Fake Dates and Mooncakes“ is a story not only about love, about family and also about grief. It is a story that absorbed me, into a reality I never wanted to leave. It tells us that we need the help of the people around us and that it is okay to accept that help. We should never let anyone reduce is to less, because of the amount of money we have. Money doesn’t define anything. What defines us are our hearts, our personalities. How we choose to treat the people around us. We are all human, the amount of money in our pockets and bank accounts does not change that, and I think we all need to remember that sometimes. "Fake Dates and Mooncakes“ shows us a beautiful love story between two young men that doesn’t focus on coming out or homophobia in once own family or in society. Do not get me wrong, it’s important to show those sides of discovering your sexuality as well., but it was so refreshing to read a boys love story that doesn’t focus on the fact that it’s two boys that are in love, this story is just about two people that are in love no matter their gender. This novel, feels like a love story that isn’t focused on gender or sexuality, it only focuses on love. And isn’t that how it should always be? This book shows us that even though we all have our issues, we need our families to lift us back up when we fall, to help us and support us in our lowest moments. Because without them, we may never get back up. This book shows us many interesting aspects of the Chinese Culture. I learned, through this book, many things about a culture that I hadn’t known much about before. The Chinese Culture is a culture of love, family, and remebrance. I will cherish this book deeply, probably forever and I hope that this reaches many more people, so this novel and this immensely talented aspiring author reaches many more young queer people to show them, that they are seen and their love stories are love stories, like everyone else’s. You deserve to be seen and you deserve your own (love) story. "That's kind of how I felt when we met. The way our paths crossed was so out of the blue that I couldn't hep but think something in the universe must've aligned." "As we move in a circle, I imagine we’re two planets in the same orbit, his gravity the only thing holding me in place.“ "Once your mom set her heart on something, nothing could stop her." "Giving your heart to someone is like learning to ride a bike. You'll skin your elbows and knees, but the pain will pass. You'll heal. And one day, the scars will be a memory, not of falling, but of getting up again." "I almost can't believe this is real. Our impossibly different worlds have come together in the best way possible, and everything feels magical." "I guess I learned that when everything seems impossible, sometimes the best thing you can do is keep calm and make mooncakes." "Yôu yuán quiān lî lái xiāng huí.“, "We have the destiny to meet across a thousand miles.“

I don’t really know what it was, but besides all the cool facts and examples about singaporian-chinese culture this book was kind of boring. Listen, I’m here for every scrap of representation I can get so usually I love any queer romance but this was just oddly paced. The plot felt rushed and also really navigated in a way. The journey of the love story just didn’t feel authentic, it felt rushed, calculated and also not really emotional? The choices that the protagonist and the love-interest made were also really odd and strange sometimes. All in all, sometimes a cute book that made me chuckle a few times and taught me some interesting things about singaporian and chinese culture. I love that, but I also kind of just wanted what the book promised me: a heartstopper-esque romance. I was looking for a cute, happy, queer love story and I guess I got that to a degree; but it wasn’t linear and it also didn’t hit the right marks for me. 2.75/5 stars.
