Thinking of how Katharine is the reigning queen while Arsinoe and Mirabella have fled the island, made me realize that everything from now on doesn’t make much sense. The “Game of Thrones” is over and everything should be said and done by now. Well, if there weren’t the citizens that don’t like the undead queen and think that the rules of the island should be overthrown, to make space for a new queen. Pacing Jules is playing a major role in Two Dark Reigns and stands for the counterweight to Katharine. Her legion curse is making her realize that there is more to her than just being a naturalist, so she leaves Arsione, Billy, and Mirabella for Bastian City, to find more about her newly discovered war gift. And what feels like seconds later, she’s the new Katniss Everdeen, the leader of a rebellion that wants to see Jules on the throne. It just happened that fast and it’s probably one of the main critique points everyone has. There are many fantasy books that build up a lot to, let’s say, a major war. It’s sometimes too excessive but the build-up makes sense and makes the reader excited for the grand finale. Here, there’s little build-up to THE final of the book and then it’s over faster than I could say Poisoner. The pace feels off and it’s a little bit disappointing that it feels like everything just scratches the surface. To say so, this book series is far more plot-driven than anything else I have read in a while. Which, for me, is refreshing, but then it feels off at the same time. Yet, in the finale, there happens a lot of game-changing things (yep, I tend to use that wording a lot with this series), but due to its very fast pace, it doesn’t feel as important as it should be. In conclusion, you either are going to like it for the entire series, or you are going to hate it. At least that is my conclusion from reading other reviews, I feel quite indifferent about it, hence to my critique. New settings By getting to know a bit of the mainland, Billy’s home, and Bastian City, therefore a new region of Fennbirn, the plot again is refreshing and interesting to read. After incisive events, Pietyr wants the undead queens gone and searches for solutions to exorcise them. Sounds like a great plan, considering how nice the undead queens in the past have been. Sunpool, the city of oracles, is a new setting as well that has been mentioned in the book, but no one so far has visited it. Oracles themselves will play a greater part as well. Characters The reader will get to know new characters, war-gifted people and oracles, as well as people from the past that come and haunt the present queens. Katharine is still my favorite queen, although she has messed up a lot so far. Arsinoe and Mirabella behave a little too smoothly for me and want to overthrow Katharine, so I can’t have that with them. Also, the fact that Katharine is possessed by dead queens makes her far more interesting (still), because you got no idea what will happen next with her when the dead ones are overpowering her. Also, from her point of view, you realize that she is able to be a normal queen and that all she ever wanted was to survive and rule Fennbirn. -- Read the full review on my blog Blattzirkus
