When Camille discovers a mysterious, decrepit well in the wheatfield behind her house, she makes a wish for a baby. Afterward, she has unsettling experiences that she convinces herself are angelic in nature, and when she’s visited one night by a strange creature, her wish comes true.
Camille’s pregnancy announcement gets more engagement than anything she’s ever posted—so what if Graham’s reaction is lukewarm? Camille’s life is finally falling into place. Folk Horror meets Social Media
I learned about this book on a Monday and I had devoured it by Wednesday. It was a journey and a really relatable one. It's a discussion around the tradwife social media movement together with the discovery of self-identity and setting your own boundaries to protect yourself and your beliefs, not to just like and be accepted. The horror part of the book is dark and seductive. An easy read that I can only reccomend to follow along while listening to Tribulation, especially for the last chapters. TW it's a little bit gore-ish at some points! At least that is how I perceived it.

Auch bei diesem Buch von Saratoga Schaefer konnte ich nicht auf die angekündigte deutsche Übersetzung warten…🤭🤭 Wie schon in meiner Rezension zu Sarah Langan‘s „Trad Wife“ erzählt, kamen beide Bücher kurz hintereinander heraus, beide mit dem Hintergrund des Trad-Wife-Phänomens und einem dämonischen Fluch👹🎥😅 Verrückter Zufall😵💫🤩 Ich hab es auch sehr genossen, beide Bücher nacheinander zu lesen und damit auch etwas zu vergleichen in der Umsetzung… 🤩Dieser Klappentext hat mich sofort abgeholt und auf „bestellen“ klicken lassen, vor allem, nachdem mir „Serial Killer Support Group“ so gut gefallen hat🤩 … und Saratoga hat mich nicht enttäuscht (sodass ich die nächsten zwei Bücher die dey dieses Jahr veröffentlicht werden gleich vorbestellt habe🤭) Durch das schnelle und intensive Erzähltempo (es spielt sich auch alles in nicht allzu langer Zeit ab) war es extrem einfach ins Buch reinzukommen und extrem schwer, es wieder wegzulegen, sodass ich es innerhalb von einem halben Tag verschlungen habe. Auch die Sprache war, trotz dass ich wieder in Englisch gelesen habe, verständlich geschrieben und in Alltagssprache☺️🗣️ Man konnte durch die Ich-Perspektive super mit Camille mitfühlen (Ich LIEBE diese Perspektive😍😍) was mich noch mehr an das Buch gefesselt hat📖 Ein wichtiger Punkt ist, dass ich (von modernen Romanen gesehen) das erste Mal wieder seit langem einen Horrorroman gelesen habe, der sich wie Horror gefühlt hat. Es ist stellenweise (❗️TW❗️) Gore enthalten (sehr detailliert und etwa 4-5 Seiten Smut🤭… das hatte ich echt nicht erwartet, da wurde ich eiskalt erwischt. Ich kann das Buch ABSOLUT empfehlen, auch schon auf Englisch. Jedoch habe ich auch gelesen, dass gerade an der Übersetzung gearbeitet wird. Für mich ist das Buch komplett eine 10/10. WOW👏🏻👏🏻 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I can't stand the whole trad wife lifestyle, the way it's marketed online, or how some of them seem to sell their children for social media attention, but I do love a good book about it. The beginning is super interesting, as the protagonist fits the cliché perfectly. It quickly becomes unsettling and disturbing, which I actually enjoyed. The book deals with themes of womanhood, female rage, family, and the influence of social media. It’s gory and really disturbing, but I liked the eerie and creepy vibes. The story moves pretty fast, though. It felt a bit too rushed for my liking. The later part of the story was a bit foreseeable, but I really liked the ending. All in all, it's a creepy story that critiques the trad wife lifestyle in a gory and disturbing way.
