I really, really enjoyed the first book and so it pains me to say: I absolutly hated this book. Anyone who ever read one of my reviews knows that I always try to find something positive, but I just can't in this case. Everything I liked about the first book ... well, let's start with that and compare it a bit. The first book was exciting. It was a great new idea I never read before and it felt really scary while reading it (my girlfriend and I felt the compulsory to buy a lot of food, just in case). You could feel the family fighting and nearly losing. In this third book? Nothing. It wasn't exciting at all, because nothing really happened - except the few lines at the end which contained the great showdown? I don't think so. And they did the same. Every. Single. Day. I felt that the characters were understandable. I could feel them, I could see why they reacted the way they did. And if I were Miranda I would have been really pissed, too. In the third part though? I hated them. There was no character I liked a bit. Miranda was annoying as hell, Matt was just stupid, unreasonable and annoying, Jon was unfortunatly just a side character and I couldn't feel any of the siblings love in this book, the Mom was boring and not existent at all, the Dad was boring and... Well, you get the point. The new characters, I didn't read the second book, mind you!, were boring, too. Or stupid. Or annoying. Or little Miss Perfect. I know I enjoyed the cute little sad ending love story in the first book. I understood it, it felt real. But please, don't get me started about the love story in the third one. Matt and Syl? Really? Why? What was the point? Syl started to exist after a few days. And Miranda and Alex were so obvious and so awkward and cringy and way, way too fast... Gah. I told you, don't get me started on this! And while we are talking about Alex; why, why on earth would you put this whole faith stuff in it? Because it's an American book? It felt so unreal and forced and like a huge stereotype ("oh, the Americans believing in God, never stumbling in their faith when they are looking into the eye of death"). Okay that was it, more or less. And one thing stayed the same, which is probably the reason for one star: it was easy to read, in terms of; well written, fluent. Stuff like this. Don't get me wrong: I'm a huge fan of the first book and I would recommend it to everyone. It even has a satisfying ending (gosh, I didn't start talking about the end, but believe me, it doesn't need saying), in my opinion. So, read it. And then stop.
