chloe gong is and always will be a phenomenal writer. her books may not be your thing when it comes to the stories but there's no denying mother gong is absolutely phenomenal. fav quotes: (non spoilers) If anyone asked Benedikt Montagov the one thing he wanted out of life, he had a very simple answer: to paint the perfect sphere. "That's not a necklace, is it?" "It is not, Bàba." "That's garrote wire, isn't it?" "Indeed it is, Bàba." "How many other weapons have you concealed on yourself?" "Five, Bàba." Lord Cai pinches the bridge of his nose and muttered, "Wode māyā, have mercy on my soul." Juliette smiled like she had been complimented. (fav hot-head) "How are you this bad?" Juliette asked in disbelief. "I thought you were Russian." "I am Russian, not an alcoholic,' Roma muttered. 11/10, forever one of my favs
i forgot what happened in this book like yesterday
These Violent Delights „Even the land of dreams needs to wake up sometimes.“ Returning home to take her role as the proud heir of one of the two ruling gangs in Shanghai, fmc Juliette Cai is once again confronted with her former lover Roma Montagov. But alongside all the drama that brings with it, there is another threat to face: a mysterious sickness that makes their victims claw their own throats out. That leaves only one question: will Juliette and Roma be able to put aside their hatred to safe the city together? Call it a Romeo and Juliette retelling and place it in 1926, Shanghai, and you get - well, this; a shakespeare-meets-new-decade-with-rivaling-gangs-and-a-mysterious-monster-tormenting-the-citizens. Well, it is a Romeo and Juliette retelling, but it doesn’t exactly feel like it. It feels new and fresh and I think that even if you don’t like Romeo and Juliette, you could still like this book. Because it just brings a lot of new perspectives and elements to the story to make it really unique. The plot is very fast paced, but doesn’t feel rushed. And like I said, although it is a Romeo and Juliette retelling it is not as foreseeable as one might think. I mean, you can guess the major plot, but the fact that there is a mysterious monster that makes the population sick gives it such a unique touch. There is just something about a problem or any kind of plot point that brings two unlikely allies together in order to solve it, that kind of gives me life. I think that is my inner teen speaking, who was obsessed with the whole two-characters-form-a-bond-to-save-the-world kinda fantasy trope, but what can I say? I just like it. Now the characters seemed very well thought through and the tension, well almost even yearning, between Juliette and Roma was just so good. I may have a soft spot for kinda misunderstood characters that blur the line between love and hate, but oh well, I’m not complaining. Plus you could really feel that they had a past together. I also really liked to read about the blend of different cultures. Juliette being Chinese, but going to an American school/ living there for a long period of time makes the perfect space for a constant conflict between two identities, (1) wanting to be herself but (2) also wanting to meet the standards that were expected from her. But at the same time we really didn’t get to see much of Romas culture or past, all we really know is that he is Russian, I hope that this gets addressed more in the next part! Buuuuuut the truth is that side character Marshall really stole the show here, ngl. And don’t even get me started on the ending - AHHH it is guaranteed to break your heart. Well the best way to summarize this book (or rather the romance part about it) is probably a quote from the book itself : „we mistook violence for passion… and thought recklessness was freedom“ If you read this, definitely read the trigger warnings! This is way more brutal and graphic than it seems, it has quite a few unexpected vivid descriptions. Genre: it’s quite a mix really, there’s mystery, romance and historical fiction with fantasy elements kinda all at once Tropes: angst, kinda enemies to lovers Spice: -
It was truly just OK. I will read the second one since it wasn't terrible and in hopes of a satisfying conclusion to this duet (though I can understand the "open end" on this one). Not the best enemy to lovers (or rather weird lover drama construct) but manageable, what kept me intrigued was the setting in Shanghai which added a nice charm to it all.
The good: The setting, Juliette, the writing. The meh: Roma, the Paul storyline, the romance. I liked the characters as individuals but not as a a couple. They didn't have chemistry, really. The bad: It was predictable. People praised this series as enemies to lovers but well... I had something else in mind when I started it. The couple weren't real enemies to lovers.
