The number of books I have bought only after looking at its cover is outrageous, I mean I didn’t even read what the book is about or the first chapter or anything which is the most logical thing to do when you are out book shopping. But for me? Nuh-uh… Like the cover? BUY IT. And that is how my friends, I ended up buying this one. Now, this is taken for granted that I went blind in the book, knowing nothing as to what it is, what it could do to me, what information I will be reading, which story my mind is going to dive in. Perhaps, it is a good thing for some books and for some books they just keep surprising you– just like this one did. 75% of the book and it kept surprising me as to what it was actually about. Yep, I have classified this book into a genre that I would like to describe as a Fantastical mystery but a lot of historical drama. Now without giving away more, let’s get into what the book is about and then the review? 😛 WHAT IS THE WONDER ALL ABOUT? An English nurse brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle-a girl said to have survived without food for months-soon finds herself fighting to save the child’s life. Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O’Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale’s Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl. Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, THE WONDER works beautifully on many levels–a tale of two strangers who transform each other’s lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil. MY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THE WONDER? To a point where we finally sit and review the book. Ah, where to start with? “SHE COULDN’T IMAGINE THE CHILD LEANING OUT OF BED TO SCRAPE CRUMBS OUT OF SOME HIDEY-HOLE, AND FRANKLY, IF THAT WERE TO HAPPEN, LIB WOULD BE GLAD. CHEAT ME, HOODWINK ME, SO LONG AS YOU EAT.” Just eat goddamn it– That’s how you are going to feel the whole way down the book. WHAT DID I LIKE ABOUT THE WONDER? The whole plot was intriguing to me. It was new, the book had it’s fantasy element, with the drama, historical fiction and the ongoing mystery that had to be revealed. Every chapter, every page set up the standards for the book. The setting of the book, whenever I sat down to read the book, I felt myself transporting to a magical place, even though it was more creepy than any Tim Burton film setting. The conflict between science and religion? I am unsure about this point but it was good to see that aspect in the book. The fact that the book kept introducing new angles to it, it kept me going or else I would have given up the book because of the pacing. The end is satisfying but heartbreaking. You will know. WHAT I FEEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT ABOUT THE WONDER? I wish the main character was a little more likable. I really didn’t like to see things from her perspective. The side characters were very irrelevant, they weren’t adding to the story but just slowed down the pace of the novel. I wish they had some depth and there was more empathy towards the character Anna. She was almost always taken as a miracle and not a human being which was sad, she was mourning for her brother and nobody seemed to pay attention to that or that’s just what I felt. The pacing of the book is so slow as I have already mentioned, the story felt like it just dragged and dragged and at times I just wanted to give up on it and read something more fast paced or something which comes to the point. Which is what annoys me most about books, I don’t to read a story which just drags on and on. Anyway, that was my list of likes and disliked. I had my issues with it, but still, and I will recommend this book to anyone looking for a tense, haunting novel that you won’t forget for a while. This also goes for people who love historical fiction. Also for people who love to collect good looking books. GO AHEAD BUY IT. RATING: 3/5 STARS Have you read any of Emma Donoghue’s books? Such a different read to Donogue's other novel Room. She definitely got to exhibit her writing skills here much more since it wasn't from the perspective of a toddler. Haunting and heart-warming with an eery atmosphere that transports you right into the foggy irish landscape, I enjoyed reading it much more than I thought I would. The mystery had me engaged from the very start and the main character was likable and steadfast throughout.
What a story! Engrossing themes, loved the development of the plot.
