Hab jetzt Buch Hangover.
I normally don't like sci-fi and thus was reluctant to read it. However, once I did start it, I was hooked immediately. The mystery is intriguing from the start and like Vis, I wondered whether any of the characters could be trusted. One of the best books I've read so far and I'm impatiently awaiting the release of the second one!!
A complete surprise hit for me - complex, intelligent and mysterious
At first, I wasn't sure i was going to like the story. It felt cumbersome and initially difficult to follow, but the captivating writing style did keep me interested. And I'm glad it did, because oh boy was this book good! I do like the academia setting, which was the biggest draw of the book for me - but in the end it was the very intelligent writing and ever-increasing mysticism the book offers, which kept me coming back day after day. The way the story unfolds (or rather, begins to unfold, because there is a mountain of lore and actual story yet to come I hope) is always understandable, yet never really foreseeable. The characters are really well written, from the gruffy yet (in the end) lovable Eidhin, the very intelligent Callidus to Emissa, Aequa and all the other students of the academy. Knowing Callidus gave his life in the end was heart-wrenching, although the words of Vis's father still ring true - "death is but a gateway, no one is ever truly gone". The magic system (as in both Will and whatever Melior was using) is very interesting and nothing I've ever come across before - but wasn't all that well explained in the book. Which does make sense in the story, seeing as Vis does everything in his power to circumvent touching anything related to Will. Still, I'm really looking forward to learning way more about it in the coming book, because that is definitely something that requires quite a bit of exposure. All in all a phenomenal book 1 of a very promising series - can't wait to read the next one!

The mystery is intriguing from the start and like Vis, I wondered whether any of the characters could be trusted. They all had their own motivations which was refreshing to see, although I was rooting for Vis to consult in at least one of his few friends. I felt Vis's pain of feeling utterly alone and I hope that things will get better for him in the next book. That his family and all that suffered from the Hierarchy get the justice they deserve. What I also found wonderful was the lack of romance. There was a little bit after the first half, but it fortunately didn't take over the story and was a rather small part of it. One of the best books I've read so far and I'm impatiently awaiting the release of the second one!!
Best book of my reading years so far. Can‘t wait for the second book.
Star Wars trifft Römisches Reich
Never knew what was going to happen next, which was a new experience. Had to subtract half a point because the font was putting me off xD so, it took me unusually long to read / finish it
Teil
