The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye (WALKING DEAD TP, Band 1)

I'm currently asking myself why I haven't read these before now as I'm a huge fan of the tv series. Love how it's slightly different to the tv show. Absolutely brilliant comics. This is the first book and we meet a fair few of the characters mainly Rick and his journey.

Man merkt deutlich die Parallen, die die Serie übernommen hat, aber auch wo bei der Verfilmung gespielt wurde. Liest sich gut weg!

Okay so I actually already finished this in February, I have no idea why it took me so long to write a review. Probably because of work and school but here it is now: my review for the first graphic novel in the The Walking Dead series. First I just want to point out that this is one of the first ever graphic novels I've read. I think I've only read one graphic novel in my whole life before so it was kind of hard getting into it but I'm really glad that it didn't disappoint. I really don't know if I just liked this one so much because I'm obsessed with the TV show but I really have to say that I enjoyed this one a lot even though - to be honest - I still like the show much better. In the beginning of the book there is a note from the author Robert Kirkman himself explaining that Rick was the main character, that he would change a lot through the whole story and he also said that this zombie story was going to last for a while and that we could expect many many more graphic novels about Rick, his family, his friends and of course about his new life. I love these kind of stories, I mean I am not that much into zombies, they are still gross and creepy as hell sometimes, but I like to read about the apocalypse and also I love to watch these kind of movies and TV shows. I just find it kind of interesting to watch people trying to survive like the worst thing that could ever happen to us. It's interesting to see how they handle things and how they change ... I don't quite know how to explain it right. I mean of course I don't want the zombie apocalypse to happen in real life it's just reading about these kind of things is like an adventure, thrilling and yes it does freak me out a lot sometimes but I still think it's sooo exciting. I hope that didn't sound too weird but I'm sure that people who like the show and the comics just as much as I do will understand haha As I said before I don't like gore and guts and blood and all this and the story does have very disgusting and mature content but what I like so much about this is that the story is not about killing it's about surviving, it's basically about people who try to built up a new life even though it might be impossible because of all the zombies running around trying to eat them. They live in constant danger but still try to live and that is what I think is very interesting. Also how they change throughout the whole story. The worst parts of course is when one of your favorite character dies, what always happens to my favorite characters. So as in the TV show in the very beginning of the book we are introduced to Rick Grimes, a police officer, who was shot and put into a coma for a couple of weeks and who wakes up completely confused and all by himself not aware of what has happened in the past weeks so of course when he "meets" the first zombie he freaks out and all he can think of is finding his wife and his son hoping that they got out safely. So we meet quite a few characters, not only Morgan and his son who kind of save Ricks life, but also a whole bunch of totally different characters who try to live together. Of course people die, and of course people go insane and yes, dumb decisions are made and no, the government isn't coming but for whatever reason they always manage to survive somehow, at least most of them. Besides the story I especially loved the art. I'm not used to reading graphic novels and sometimes I cought myself only reading the little speech bubbles and not paying attention to the drawings what was kind of dumb so I always had to go back look at the pictures and read the speech bubbles again but that was just something I needed to get used to and the more I looked at the gorgeously drawn pictures the more I enjoyed and liked the whole story. Altogether I really liked the first volume of The Walking Dead and I've already bought the second one. I can't wait to dive back into the story and I am very curious to find out what characters from the show will also appear in the comics.

This is so not about zombies... It's weird, having watched the show first. I got attached to some characters (Shane), and they're really not as important in the comic. The only thing I can't decide whether I like or not is that everybody's getting together with everybody..though the more I think about it the more natural it seems. Still, it seems a little bit overdone. One way or another, amazing read.

Well, I miss some of the TV characters, but Rick and Lori are way less annoying than in the TV show...

Meine Meinung: Als ich das erste Mal die Serie The Walking Dead im TV sah, war ich irgendwie sofort infiziert. :D Ich habe so gebannt vor dieser Serie gesessen und mit einer Spannung wie schon lange nicht mehr mitgefiebert. Wie der Titel schon sagt, geht es um den Tod auf Latschen. Das ist meine liebste Bezeichnung dafür, um der ganzen Gewalt doch einen lustigen Touch zu geben. In The Walking Dead steht ein Kleinstadtpolizist im Mittelpunkt, der aus dem Koma erwacht und in einer Zombie-Apokalypse aufwacht. Überall liegen verrottete Körper herum, zerfetzt und blutig - und noch viel mehr laufen wie Streuner herum, auf der Suche nach menschlichem Frischfleisch. Rick Grimes hat keine Ahnung in was er da hineinstolpert. Sein erster Kontakt mit einem Zombie ist nur ein halber Körper, der kriechend nach ihm schnappen will, jedoch so ausgezerrt ist und absolut keine Chance hat, sich groß fortzubewegen. Als Rick sein Zuhause betritt, sind seine Frau und sein Sohn fort. Völlig erschöpft und verängstigt sinkt er zu Boden, wo er schließlich von einem kleinen Jungen mit einer Schaufel ausgeknockt wird. Als er wieder zu Bewusstsein kommt, steht ein Vater mit seinem Sohn vor ihm und erklärt, in welchem Szenario sie nun alle festsitzen. Dock Rick will nicht aufgeben und deckt sich auf dem Polizeirevier für die Suche nach seiner Familie ein. Es ist der Beginn eines absolten Albtraums, denn er weiß nicht was mit diesen Menschen passiert ist. Was hat sie zu dem werden lassen, was sie nun sind und wieso wandeln sie noch, wenn sie eigentlich nicht mehr leben dürften? Und die wichtigste Frage: Was ist mit seiner Familie passiert? "Gute alte Zeit" ist ein passender Titel für diesen Comic, denn die Protagonisten müssen erst noch herausfinden in welcher Lage sie stecken und wie tief sie schon drin hängen. Sie versuchen sich mit positiven Erinnerungen zu stärken, aber schnell wird klar, dass nichts mehr so ist, wie es einmal war und das genau diese Erinnerungen auch schmerzen können. Die Idee zu dieser Geschichte kam von Robert Kirkman, der sich zusammen mit Tony Moore den Traum verwirklicht hat The Walking Dead Leben einzuhauchen. In seinem Vorwort erklärt er, wieso es ausgerechnet Zombies sein mussten und wieso für ihn die Entwicklung der Charaktere im Fordergrund steht. Kirkman sagt, dass diese Comics eine Chronik sein sollen und selber noch nicht weiß, in welche Richtung sich alles entwickelt. Er will zeigen, wie sehr Menschen sich in so einer Zombie-Apokalypse verändern können und wieso Essen und warme Kleidung plötzlich wichtiger sein können als TV und Internet. Kirkman testet die Grenzen aus, wie weit ein Mensch bereit ist zu gehen um das zu beschützen, was ihm lieb ist. Die Comics unterscheiden sich laut vieler Internetaussagen von der Serie, aber da die Serie auf dieser Idee basiert, wollte ich auch diese Bücher endlich kennenlernen, denn aktuell gibt es keine bessere Serie für mich als The Walking Dead. Wenn ich Serie mit Comic vergleiche, dann sieht man Parallelen, aber ich war richtig erfreut, dass nicht alles genauso ist, wie ich es kenne. Dieses Buch konnte mich ziemlich stark überraschen und bisher vertraute Charaktere - über die ich schon ein gewisses Bild hatte - kamen anders rüber. Es gab sogar neue Charaktere, die mir geholfen haben das vorgefertigte Bild, was ich durch die Serie hatte, abzuschwächen und mir den Einstieg in diese Comicwelt leichter gemacht haben. Die Handlungen sind absolut nachvollziehbar und ich kann jetzt schon sagen, dass ich absolut fasziniert bin! Dieses Comic ist einfach der absolute Oberhammer. Die Zeichnungen sind spitze und auch wenn ich kein großer Comic-Fan bisher war, hat sich das spätestens jetzt geändert. Ich dachte immer Comics wären nichtssagender als vollgeschriebene Bücher, aber da habe ich mich getäuscht. Bilder sagen halt doch mehr als tausend Worte. Aktuell gibt es sechzehn Bände. Band siebzehn erscheint in Deutschland Ende März diesen Jahres und es sind definitiv noch weitere geplant. Ich freu mich wie 'nen Schneekönig. :DD
