This debut novel is not a breeze to read but still very exhilirating. The story follows the last of the Seraph Knights and a baby on their way to the Shining City, the last bastion of humanity. Fleeing the evil demonic forces that are infesting the post-apocalyptic world, ruined in a war between good and evil. The most remarkable aspect is, the fact that 3 of 4 of the lead characters do not speak, one being the mute Vagrant, the baby and a goat. If it wasn't for Harm, our fourth man, the world-building would simply not work. As it is, most of it happens through flashbacks, that reveal the nature of the demonic hordes, the story the baby and the Vagrant share as well as giving us some hints regarding character traits. It's difficult to get a clear picture of the desolate world the band is travelling as well as the characters motives, thus the reader stays emotionally cut off from the journey. Which is a shame. At the same time it was an addictive read. I even enjoyed the POVs of the bloody goat! As the story unfolds the muteness of the Vagrant becomes a driving force for his characterization. His actions talk louder and paint a better picture of him than a monologue ever could. The writing is sharp and not overly verbose. I like it more poetic but what really was a treat for my soul was the integration of music. It's a hard task for a fantasy novel and is only achieved rarely satisfactory. Newman did so with flying colours. Def. a recommendation for anyone who looks for something different, odd but still action-filled and exciting. You'll cheer fo the goat, I promise~
